Anyone need an old Sun?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Dr Ivan D. Reid, Sep 30, 2010.

  1. We're about to scrap an old Sun System that is too slow and too
power-hungry for our needs. Anyone need a spare space heater?

Sun Enterprise 250 computer (I think it's dual CPU, no idea how much memory
but I understand it was once one of our Central systems).

3 off Sun Storedge A1000 disk arrays, 2 with 12x18GB drive, one with 9x18GB.
We may need to wipe the disks before they leave the site.

It was all connected and working a few months ago.

Any details on the actual disk drives? I'm interested in just those if
    they're not too far away.

You need Raid Manager software on the Sun to reconfigure the A1000.
You might even need it just to see the LUNs but it's a while since I
    last used it.
It's not supported on Solaris 10 but should still work.

I can't remember the A1000's that well, maybe I was thinking they were
D1000's (the SCSI version) IIRC, We used all A5000's Photon's on FC-
AL at one place I worked.

You're right, maybe I'll stick with my JBOD 12 Slot toaster ;)

If anyone has a need for SCA SCSI disks by the way, I have a job lot.
    Mostly 147Gb's

    Oh, and a Sparc1+, a SS5, S10, E250 and 2xUltra 5's

All available at at a UR station near you.

    Old? 1998. Pah!

My Sun 3/60 is ten years older. Mined ewe it must be ten years since I
last gave its disk drives the kickstart they need -- absolutely
literally, the lubrication on the drive spindles coagulates and a hard
kick is needed to get them to spin.

There's some software on there I'd *love* to have again, but I only
    have an MC68020 version. Booger.

Hmmm I'll have to check what my old Compaq uses when I get home. I use
it as a backup device so I'd deffo be interested in these as yours are
    bigger than Ivan's fnar.

And the special cables with the mini connector at the server end.
    And the HVD terminators.

  12. Funny, I always thought they shipped in that condition.

If'n you have a model number I know an old Slowlaris-wrangler whose
maintenance provider is Fleabay, who may be interested.

I'm very tempted to say yes, but I can't. Nowhere to put it.

I am feeling quite pleased - I am building a server based on ubuntu
server. I have installed it on a 4GB memory stick, and the chassis is
currently booting without any hard disks at all. Tomorrow I will
install the 8Tb of green mode hard disks that I bought, and experiment
    with different arrangements.

Plan A is to set up two of them in raid 1, and the other two in an
LVM, but I am also going to play with ZFS if I can jbex out how to
install it on ubuntu. One idea is to have the 2Tb raid array
"published" to the outside world, and run a daemon that will save
compressed versions of saved files to a 4Tb logical volume.

Following on from my discussions with marc etc. to build a solar
powered server, I have cyclon batteries on order for this one and some
surplus solar panels. A few schottky diodes will complete the set:
the motherboard is 19V powered by an external power brick, and I
intend to power it off the batteries. The original mains supply and
the two solar panels will both float the battery. A bit of voltage
trimming and it will only draw power from the mains as a last resort.

running off solar power means that plan A will probably have to go, as
we don't want the daemon running all the time. Because plan B is to
have it suspend to S3 if it is not busy, and wake-on-lan. I need to
find a simple way to send magic wol packets before I can do that, of
    course.

It's a sandpit, really, but a bloody great big one.

The current arrangement, with just the motherboard and the 4G memory
stick, draws some 2W while running. I can't underclock it, alas. boo.

Need an "eco" case for it?

I was going to ask if you thought it was UL rated, but I noticed the bit
where they say it is ...

They don't mention being CE marked, or mention EMC or RFI anywhere.

I can molish things of cradboard. But most places I jbex now ban
    stanley knives.

  17. Sun Enterprise 250 seems to be the model number. Nothing on the back panel
    except UL numbers and such.
