Anyone have a clue about the CHEAPEST, RELIABLE repair I could do to a fork leg?

Woe, woe and more woe. This FJR of mine is costing me a fucking
    fortune! Sigh...

OK. FJR1300, 2001, 4 months out of warranty. 17,500 miles, FSH.

Right fork leg has been weeping for a few weeks but now it pissing
out, soaking the brakes in the process. So, new fork seal, easy, no?
    No.

Fork out of bike OK, but it won't strip down or rebuild without
special tools. A damper rod holder and a seal driver. I'm sure these
can be bodged up, but not by me with my old tool set. Examine the
fork, because something must have caused the seal to go. There is a
small lip, looks like a tiny hole with the chrome raised in the
    staunchion.

Damn, a new seal will just rip again, so I need to repair this. Any
ideas how without replacing the leg? I can get it rechromed. Long
time to find a chromer, get the part there, pay mucho beer tokens. I
can get a new staunchion. Only £130 + vat to you sir! What else can
be done for a reliable repair? Any clues?

I'm off the the shop to get a copy of MCN for the ads, but any help
    would be great.

Bloody dodgy! If there is a 'lip', it normally means the fork has been bent
then straightened sometime in the past. There is no way a 'lip' would/could
form on a hard-chromed stanchion through wear alone.
Speak to 'the doc' at the FJ owners club. Google for FJOC.
He's now doing much in the way of spares/maintenance/repairs/special tool
hire for XJRs as well as the old FJs.

  3. I have had similar probs...

Shiney leggy bit, yep, expensive to buy new.
Re-chroming; takes a couple of weeks, once a chromer has been,
as you say, found. Is cheaper than new though.
Rub down with oil stone; might work... Epoxy
    in any 'oles...

Damper rod holder: I make do with using something like a hex key thingy,
on a socket, on a 3" extension, on a 12" extension, or something like
that. Other alternative is to get a length of threaded rod, and use 2
nuts at each end tightened together, IYSWIM.

As for the seal driver, ummm... can't remember what I usually use. A
hacked-up bathroom sealant tube rings a bell...

Choose nearest from this lot, I used the Luton one. £128 the pair, 14 days.

I use a rigid plastic tube or seal replacement.
Use electrical cleaner after gently rubbing down the affected area carefully
using a FINE oilstone, and after cleaning Araldite.
    Then new seal.
Until you get a replacement fork tube that is

But at the mo I can't see inside to see exactly what it attaches to.
    Ta anyway.
This bit should be OK I suppose, I've driven seals in before in other
    bits of bike.

Travel and / or postage will eat into a lot of time, unfortunately.
Done this on an old 500 four in the 80's. Leaked a week after, so my
skill set isn't top rated here! :)
Only want to do it once so might as well get it now. But cheaper than
    £130!

I did the forks on my CB like this almost 2 years ago. They still don't
leak and there's no sign of the filler material falling out yet.
