Have to be a fuckoff big ruler, as there's no chain between the
    sprockets :)

Didn't we do this a while ago? I struggled for ages with the metal
rods/scaffold planks/bits of string rubbish with wheel alignment, until
my friendly[1][2] MOT tester showed me how to do it by eye from the
    front wheel.

I'll be you that's just as accurate as any 'spensive lasery pointery thingy.

Oh that's even easier then - just tape a bit of string to the face of
the front sprocket, pull it tight against the face of the rear
sprocket, & when it makes contact with both the front & back edges of
the rear sprocket at the same time, it's lined up. Or just eyeball it
    from behind.

Based on Ginge's response, off group replies are ok, if you don't want
to admit to owning one ;-)

Hmm, that could work. It's a bit low tech though, compared with lasers
    strapped to our foreheads ..
