Anyone got any old hard disk drives going begging?

I've just turned a long pensioned off Dell Dimension XPS R400 in to a
Ubuntu server. Mainly for playing about with LAMP projects without using
up space on a paid for virtual server and "because it's there". Is it
possible to get cheap, high capacity Ultra ATA drives these days? Anyone
    got one going spare?

I tried getting FreeNAS on to it but it wouldn't play, so I may
experiment with that on the lad's cast off Dimension 1100, which TBF
would be a better base for the server really.

    What size?
I've got a various mixture of sizes, also I guess it'll be IDE not ATA

I have an identical pair of Maxtor 15G hard drives that should suit.
We had them for a server which was made redundant in about 2004 ...
they should be still working, they certainly were when we replaced
them. IIRC the only difference in them was the serial number .. If
you're interested in them I guess they'll cost a tenner to post, dunno
what they're worth, I can put a pic up on Flickr later if you like and
write/zoom in on the full specs of them.

I'm just about to skip a machine with a 10 meg MFM drive in it. I know it's
not IDE but there is a full length ISA bus controller so that shouldn't be
    a problem.

    Any use?

There seemed to be less choice than I remembered (most were SATA) but I've
found a 40GB Seagate that you are welcome to if that's big enough.

More than adequate. Can I send you a paypal payment and my address?
Alternatively I could pick it up, as IIRC you are fairly 'local' and
have to venture out in your direction with the YZ motor this week.

I'm in B98 during office hours and DY5 outside them, if that's local enough.

If not I can find a box and chuck it in the post

DY5 is but a mere hop, skip and jump. Email me details and let me know
when would be convenient to drop by.

    My sig address is valid.

Nah, already got a 20 MB one that I never filled beyond half capacity.

Indeed. Hope the Touraine proves drinkable.
Installation was easier than I remember from the last time I added a
disk. Even managed to get it setup for Ubuntu just using the server
terminal and arcane commands discovered by googling. Proper computing!
Just got to edit the samba.conf now to share it across my home network.
Makes fiddling with LAMP and Joomla experiments much quicker than having
    to faff about with FTP.

I owe you a paddock pass for Loton or somewhere else this year and if I
can swing it a photographer's pass. Thanks again.

Arcane? Heathen. At least they're the same across many platforms. | more
    or less.
SCP's pretty quick to setup as well.

I'm sure we'll manage to choke it down :0)
Excellent, glad to be of service.
I wasn't expecting anything in return, but wouldn't say no. Thanks

Try webmin. Then you can do everything with a spangly web interface from
    the comfort of another PC.

So much choice - I remember when you had to remember all your Apple DOS
    commands!

The lad's cast off Dell 1100 box has now been turned in to a FreeNAS
server in addition to the Ubuntu server on the ancient Dell XPS. Took a
bit of figuring out how to get it streaming video at a decent speed but
it is. The computer room now really is a server room and I need hardly
any extra heat on - though I do today.

Latest experimentation is synchronising to a remote MySQL database using
myPHPadmin. That will make deployment of my pilot Joomla sites much
    easier.
