Mate, is going to be 40 degrees again and 60-70% humidity. You must be
really keen to go riding in that.

I was in Port Sorell at 8am. Was in Hobart 11am, and only got lost once and
only took one other wrong turn.

  11. Brother and I decided on a quick blat, to check the speedo he's been
fidgeting with. Didn't bother putting on a jacket, coz we were just
    going up the road.

    300 km later.......

After today's run, I'm starting to think that a jacket actually keeps
you COOLER in this heat - if you're continually moving.

    Still haven't finished rehydrating.

What was the temperature up there? 40 degrees? Normal body temperature is 37
degrees. Temperature of the air on the inside of your jacket will be
somewhere between 37 and 40 degrees, split the difference, say 38.5 degrees.
Temperature of the air contacting your skin without a jacket would be 40
degrees. So if the air temperature exceeds body temperature, you will be
cooler with a jacket on than without, wouldn't you?

It's a good question to ask Dr Karl.

I don't much like riding without a jacket, since I find a flapping
shirt VERY annoying.[1] When it's around 35-40C I find it much cooler
to soak my t-shirt with water, then put my jacket on over it and just
leave 1 small vent open (in the jacket). That gives an evaporative
cooling effect that'll last about 45 minutes.

If I just wet the t-shirt and don't wear a jacket over it the shirt
will be dry again in about 10 minutes on a hot day.

[1] No, pasty chaps like myself shouldn't go out in the sun shirtless.

No you are quite correct, I haven't explained that mechanism at all. However,
if you're riding without a jacket on a hot day, the effects of the body core
temperature increasing will cause enlargement of the blood vessels, which will
allow more core heat to be transferred to the skin -perspiration- which will
evaporate much more quickly with direct exposure to wind and sun, and when the
skin dries it will absorb more heat from the air and transfer that back to the
core, due to the increased blood flow caused by vasodilation. If you were
wearing a jacket, the perspiration would soak into the material, or at least
not evaporate so quickly off the skin and have a longer lasting cooling effect
and surely that would keep you cooler, longer.

  17. Caught up with a guy at Cooyar on Sunday. Him and his partner were
touring, and decked out in full protective equipment. When I pulled up,
they were both shovelling handfuls of crushed ice down their t-shirts,
before donning the jackets and continuing on their way.

Stopped for fuel and lukewarm dim sims in Perth [1], and a piss-stop after
the first [2] bump on the Mud Walls road.

[1] Not that Perth. The one up near Spreyton.
[2] The first of millions. Back must be coming good just as the bladder
starts to fail. Anyone want to check the prostate?
