Anyone ever flogged a "desirable" registration?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, Jan 30, 2006.

  1. I emailed one of the on-line "Buy a Plate" companies today with a mildly
    interesting number.

I was, quite frankly, fucking gob-smacked with the amount they offered
    me if they sell it.

Now my greed gland is twitching...

Anyone advertised and sold a reg no? What's the best way to do it?

Tried it a few years back with my personal plate on the 'wing.
    A13 RCW.
They wanted a load of "commission" for selling it too. Sadly it went with
the bike when I sold it to a dealer in bits.
    IIRC was http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/selling.asp

I've seen quite a few on Fleabay too

    Pretty close.

    If your name is Yeo.

    And you own a V6.

Wicked Uncle Nigel emerged from their own little world to say
I sold one years ago via an agency. Just before the "can't transfer from
    tractors" rule came in.

Long before the internet was in general use. I responded to an advert in
Exch & Mart. They agency had a buyer already lined up so the transaction
    was done very quickly.

I was very happy with the deal. T20 tractor was bought for £150, used for 4
years and then sold on for £150. I got just under £300 for the plate after
    commission.

If you can be arsed, ring around some of the agencies. If the plate is
actually desirable then ask for an offer in writing. If you are lucky one
of them will have a clinet waiting on the books. Last time I looked in
Autotrader there were loads of ads. Obviously you might not get the best
price as the fuckers will want their mark-up but the process is relatively
painless as they will do all the faffing about with DVLA transfers etc.

Alternatively, stick it on Ebay and spam the forums/newsgroups of your
    target market.

Oh, and the one that usually deters people: the donor vehicle must have a
valid MOT and RFL at the time of transfer.

IMV, the main reason the Thatcher govt. banned transfers from tractors is
that they don't need an MOT or RFL, and they didn't want their new revenue
stream from unsold reg. nos undermined by every farm vehicle collector
unloading cherished nos. onto the market.

Oh, it's not worth *that* much, then.

It appears they'd sell it for £394, so they must be offering roughly
    £180 for it, then.

(I thought of flogging a plate to them once, but it wasn't worth the
    hassle for £175)

Gosh, Steve H talking bollocks for a change.

Their opening bid is four figures. (The V and the 6 may not necessarily
    be in that order, BTW).

When we were selling SO's MX5 I advertised the reg as available separately
on the ebay and autotrader listing. In the end someone at work saw a
poster stuck on the car and rung up asking about it. I made £200 profit
    on what it cost me.

I'm a tight sod generally and I managed to get my plate for less than
£100. I had been looking for a reg that ended 1ANE for a while, I was
just looking at cars with the view to make someone an offer if their plate
matched. In the end I saw a it on a SORover 200 for sale for £350. Bought
it, transfered the plate and flogged the car on within a month for £300.

One that weirded me out the other day was seeing a newish silver BMW
coupe pull into the petrol station and a little old granny get out of
the driving seat. The registration was H* CUM.
