Ah yes, Ian Smith's little despotic corner of the globe.
Now Robert Mugabe's little despotic corner of the globe.

Well, historical what-ifs are never really provable, but consider the
logistics. It wouldn't have been easy to land a big enough force to take over
Washington, let alone the rest of a landmass the size of America would it?

My comment that the US political system will be a busted flush and
unrecognisable in 30 years is based on no historical precedent or, TBH,
    any rationale analysis.

I do think elements within the religious right will be 'emboldened' by
the Bush win which they see as an endorsement of their policies [1] and
continue to push their agenda and the stricter controls on personal
freedoms that brings. With an even more strident and closely controlled
    media.

On the other hand many of the normal working "Mom and Pop" US citizens
will start to kick against this. Throw in a more confident and
autonomous European youth movement [2] which will begin to affect
sections within its US counterpart and there will be real dissent within
    the US.

Then consider economic pressure from, perhaps, China; movement of capital
out of the US; collapse of manufacturing and in 15-20 years we'll see
civil unrest unparalled since the sixties.

Add this to a predicted over reaction from the conservative establishment
and it's a case of light socio/economic touch paper and retire.

[1] Certainly today's Daily Mail was.
[2] We're starting to see this within the anti-globalisation groups

I was impressed with the bravery of the Merkins who protested in feb 2003.
They knew they were going to get a clacking from the riot cops, and worse
treatment at the hands of the judiciary than us more lily liberalised pinko
european countries. Plus the fact that by and large the press and general
opinion over here was anti-war anyway compared to the US.

We're setting the bangy things off about half eight if you're sorted
by then. We did the film first, couldn't find Wayne's World so Bill
and Ted it was/is. I've come to the conclusion it was funnier the
first time when I was young.

A suggestion has been made that they didn't hold on to the 13 colonies
    for economic reasons.

The entire tax revenue from the American colonies was around 20% of
that from *Jamaica* in the 1770s.

It (at the time) didn't seem worth the time, effort and expense.
Well, they controlled a landmass the size of India, with a
    considerably larger population *after* 1776.

    would it?

Only it wasn't the whole land mass, was it. Mostly the Eastern coast
    strip (which isn't a club).

Why didn't they? Parliament was against it - George III was never
reconciled to the loss of the colony, costs, war with France.

True, but it was easier to divide and rule there amonst petty kingdoms.
