Nobody said you did, its just for someone who claimed that stuff on the
internet proves nothing you - do seem to be using a lot of links. Lets hope
no one flys a plane into your ivory towers.

  3. But Bush has only to install four youngish extreme [and probably
evangelical] conservatives in the Supreme Court, and any question of
progressive legislation could be a non-starter for maybe 30-35 years.
    Yikes.

Sorry, I don't know where Kilkenny is, we were in Dublin, Killarney,
    Limerick, Galway, Derry and Cavan.

His nominations must be confirmed by the Senate, so it's not as easy as
    that.

Maybe you wouldn't, but that doesn't mean that a significant minority
    (i.e. 48%) can't do it.

Generalising about nations is pretty pointless, imo, and can be
    downright dangerous.
    See above.

  13. I think it's a question of degree. Remember that, on the day, the estimates
ranged up to 30,000 possible deaths in the towers. The US were quite
capable of blaming the sinking of the USS Maine on the Spanish, whereas it
was probably an onboard flash-fire in the magazine. They were capable of
dreaming up the mythical attack by North Vietnamese gun-boats, as a way to
justify direct action. They were allegedly aware of the imminence of the
attack on Pearl Harbor, but that was done by the 'enemy', albeit that
Roosevelt's oil and steel embargo had left the Japanese with no real
alternative but to attack. Operation Northwoods was only 'war games', after
    all, and didn't happen.

It's a long way from any of those actions and imaginings to actually
cold-bloodedly killing many thousands of your own citizens. Admittedly,
Stalin managed it but in a democracy, especially a modern democracy,
information leaks. Imagine the lynch-mobs if just one agent got an attack
of God, disgust or conscience and spilled all he knew to the media [1]. As
dear Asterix might say, "Ils sont fous, ces Americains", but they're really
    not *that* crazy!

[1] I suppose, TBF, that it might yet happen!

  17. Granted, but now he has an even more compliant Senate, with an increased
Republican majority. Or is a simple majority vote insufficient for
    confirmation?

  18. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Kilkenny's about 80mls SW of Dublin. I only ask in case you'd passed
this way, Sod's Law being what it is. Fwiw, I've noticed the number of
Merkin visitors appears to have risen this year compared to last as folk
    gradually get their nerve back.

It takes a simple majority to confirm the nomination. There are
'hearings'[1] first and sometimes this make the nominee not want the
    post.

    [1] think inquisition.
