Anyone else up watching things unfold?

  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
PoO, Mr T; the Waffen SS despised the scum and rabble in SS uniform who
guarded the camps. Sure, the Waffen SS weren't innocent of murdering
civilians in the advance/retreat through Russia, but most of the
atrocities were committed by the einsatzgruppen who followed up.

There's an element of "he would say that, though, wouldn't he?" to be
taken into account, but in an autobiog of a Waffen SS general I read
some years ago, he was quite vehement in his defence of the Waffen SS
and their generally fine fighting record. He pointed out that the camp
SS was recruited from the military and civil prisons and rejected any
notion that Waffen SS troops were involved in any way.

Fwiw, it had a ring of truth about it.

  3. I'd add here that the Waffen SS committed numerous atrocities against
    both civilians and military.

If you want an insight into the way the SS carried out the
exterminations, then there are several masterly works on the subject[1].
Suffice to say that the camp SS was *not* entirely recruited as yoiu say
    above.

That said, the Waffen SS were probably the finest soldiers *ever* to go
into battle. There may have been soldiers as good, but I think you'd
have to go back to ancient Roman, Greek and Spartan times to find an
    equivalent.

Good or bad, the Waffen SS's fighting record speaks for itself. They
were absolutely incredible, and (given modern materiel) they would
probably kick seven shades of shit out of *any* army presently on the
    planet.

    I now await Weggy's and Dodger's[1] comments.

[1] I have one here in this room, but I can't find the damn volume right
    now....
[2] I regard their opinions, on this sort of thing, quite highly,
although it may make them blush to hear it said.

    Sounds like overkill to me.

    <Looks round>

OK, I'm not in a pub, but what follows is at a strictly man-in-the-pub
    level.

You know those burglar alarms that consist of a beam of light shining
into a photocell? That go off if the beam is interrupted?

Well, suppose there were two of those, set diagonally across a level
crossing. If either beam was interrupted, it would mean either a car or
a train was on the crossing.

If there were two more, going across the railway, on either side of the
crossing, then whether those beams were broken or not would show whether
the thing on the crossing was a train or a car.

Obviously it would have to be taken over time... so if, say, there was a
period of one second during which
    a) one or both of the diagonally-across-the-crossing beams was
    interrupted
    and
    b) both the across-the-tracks beams were not interrupted
then it would be because there was a car on the crossing.

    If this happened while
    c) the gates of the crossing were down
then that could trigger a warning in the signal box.

OK, that's quite possibly bollocks, but I'd be interested to know why.

It would certainly be a lot cheaper than turning all level crossings
    into bridges or tunnels.
Heh. I only read the Torygraph when all better choices are unavailable.

No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm pushing Des to recognise that people
who run checkpoints and get hurt are to some extent the authors of their
own misfortune. It's analogous to playing on a railway and wondering why
    you get electrocuted.

When I was 17, I was savvy enough to know that if I'd approached a
checkpoint manned by Lozzo, and he pointed a gun at me and shouted STOP,
stopping would be a good idea. Come to think of it, I was probably savvy
enough to know that when I was 7.

What's the point, eh? No, seriously, what _is_ the point?

He never recognises anything he doesn't want to, you can produce all of the
evidence that you like and, at best, he'll go quiet, more likely he'll claim
    that he's still right.

So you have to ask, "Why fucking bother?"

But that was in large part because of the massive drain on their resources

  12. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
    (The Older Gentleman) saying
    something like:
Of course. They were on a mission and being thoroughly indoctrinated
with racial hatred they saw no reason to spare the bullets when upset by
bolshie villagers, partisans or inconvenient prisoners. I've no doubt
individual commanders went too far in their zeal, but bear in mind they
weren't expecting to be held accountable later on, fully expecting their
descendants to be busy farming all that lebensraum.

Like every army, it had its fair share of nutters (perhaps more than
    most).
As I say, it was hardly an objective account, but I think he was telling
the truth when he said the majority of Waffen SS wouldn't have anything
to do with it. Indeed, I recall an episode when Himmler was told to get
fucked when he wanted to use WSS units on camp duties.

No-one said they deserve to die... the point is, if you come up to an
armed checkpoint, with people toting firearms, you have a choice...
stop and let youselves be checked out, or run the risk of giving the
impression that you are a threat... If, as a serving member of HM
Forces you percieve there to be a threat, where possible you
    neutralise that threat...

    Hmmmm.... there isn;t one?

Yes, I know, he's a troll. I guess there's an element of 'dance, boi,
dance'. I'm not hoping to change his opinions, but there's a certain
fascination in seeing just *how* various people manange to out-manoeuve
    him.

But if you say it's a waste of time, I'd find it hard to disagree.
