  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Preston Kemp"
Do a google for 'Mi Lai'.

....can you think of a SENSIBLE reason...?
No-one's suggesting the death penalty be imposed by courts after the
event. We're talking about soldiers who feel threatened taking action
which they, rightly or wrongly, feel to be necessary to defend
    themselves.

Wizard secured a place in history by writing:
Don't have any problem with the soldier-supporting perspective. I just
think these are *sensible* reasons (ie plausible) and people are likely to
end up dead despite them. Which warrants some consideration at least, even
    if you ultimately conclude 'tough'.

More significant I feel were the likes of Marshall Zhukov. For example,
when faced with a mine field he'd just march straight through it. His
argument was that the loses would be about the same as if the Germans had
    defended it by conventional means.

IIRC, he was a survivor of Stalin's purges. This meant he came to his
rank quite young and I suspect it gave him some appreciation of the power
of fear to motivate people, and a casual disregard for human lives.

Without Zhukov and his ilk I'm sure that Germany would have been defeated
but it might have taken a lot longer. Of course, with less catastrophic
losses on the Eastern front they'd have had more resources for the other
fronts, which might have been significant.

And they'd also have more time to pursue their V-weapon and nuclear
research, with who knows what results.

Quite. I post to/read UKRM for my entertainment, so what I post or who
I reply to is my business alone. You'll find conversing with Des
ultimately frustrating though...but more power to your elbow. You'll
    need it....

  18. Zilch. V-weapons were a dead end without nukes, and Germany was a long,
long way from ever assembling one.

There was one half-built experimental pile at.... Nuremberg? Heidelberg>
I'll google for it later... but Germany, at that satge, just didnt have
    the industrial muscle or cash.
