  1. Don't bother. The tedium is beyond belief.

I think it's more amusing, although possibly a bit frightening, that when
they were working on a self-sustaining nuclear reaction they weren't
entirely sure just how self-sustaining it would be.

They theorised that there was a possibility that it would set fire to the
atmosphere and create a global firestorm.

Remember kids, do not try to bring about nuclear Armageddon in your own
    home.

Bit of a waste innit? Why not something cheap and rough since any decent
    curry should fry your tastebuds?

    The OG mutttered
About on the money. He seems to have gone quiet on it now, but
looking a few weeks into the future, Des will return to this, like a
dog picking its scabs, and make reference to it - and probably will
also have one of those conversations he quotes with the i-people who
agree with his delusions. Then he'll _Guffaw_ or somesuch...

Thinking on it, maybe he should go into Law. In the USA. If he was a
state prosecutor, no one accused of a capital crime would ever get
convicted, given his ability to deal with logic and sources. That
would get his death sentence issue solved in one....

Catman bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the

  11. The idea that huge amounts of energy might be released from the atom had
been widely published in science fiction and other circles many years
    before Alamogordo.

The Older Gentleman was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Well, *our* emperor obviously wanted some toys of his own, pronto. And
some colonies, don't forget the colonies...
Well, that's never stopped any of the inbreds...

  17. No, but in another posting in this thread I do mention the SF
    predictions.

Strikes me that dear old Dessie has been hung out to dry *again*.

Considering at least one, and possibly two, posters were using k/files
and thus only seeing quoted text, it's a singular achievement that he
not only failed to argue his corner but also failed to acknowledge his
    errors...

  18. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember
    (The Older Gentleman) saying
    something like:
Dangerous stuff, science fiction. Actually, reading the account of the
Manhattan Project, it strikes me that given the obstacles that had to be
overcome and the stupendous cost I very much doubt that any country
would have developed an atomic weapon much before the 60s or 70s if it
    hadn't been for WW2.

At several stages during the project it looked as if the whole thing was
a fizzle and wouldn't be ready on time, if at all.

The Older Gentleman emerged from their own little world to say
I've not seen the rose over here. I bought some when in Macon. It was on
promo in Casino. 6 bottle case for 13.5 Euros. I wish I had bought more; as
you say, it was very pleasant.
