Googled for that, did you? In fact, that's not the first use of the
term. But even if it was the first use it *still* predates nukes.
Maybe not by much, but before is before.
One day you will get something correct, and I look forward to it. I
will genuinely applaud you on that day. But it isn't today.

  6. And no one outside of a very restricted group of people knew anything
about "Oppenheimers little toy", even the pilot of Enola Gay didn't know
what he was really carrying. So W.T.R. Fox must have coined the phrase
Superpowers without any knowledge of the atomic bomb or that a
Superpower must have to posses atomic weapons to be a Superpower
And that was my 2p worth.

  7. I seem to be missing footnotes today - I blame the codeine..

[1] - Some states sided with Napoleon and some with Britain. The ones
that sided with Britain were the Hanoverian States. Guess where the
    British King came from?

  9. It irritates me, as well..... But at least it gets the messages out and
back quickly, even if it sometimes triple-posts them.

    The Older Gent muttered
I prefer to use a slightly less perjorative term such as "pigheaded".
Des isn't stupid, though at times it's hard to believe. He's just a
big daft old semi-troll that can't admit his own failings.

    andrew_wegg, Nov 5, 2004
  11. That sounds like Des - all the empathy of several chunks of granite
    falling down a mountain..

  12. Logically and succinctly put, Mister Whittingham. Well done.

The Older Gentleman, Nov 5, 2004

  13. Oh, indeed, that's why I used the word "ignorance" not stupidity. I
mean, I don't think I'm stupid, but I know I'm ignorant on all sorts of
things, but I'm not stupid enough to not to know I'm ignorant.

    IYSWIM.

    And Aden. And Egypt.

  15. Aden I'd forgotten about.

Egypt.... hm...... I suppose you could classify it as a guerrilla war.

Heh. Iggernerant has got an undertone though, hasn't it?

Got the Hastings book Armageddon yesterday, BTW. (14.99 in Surrey
Bookshops). Enjoying it muchly so far. Reading until 1am isn't good
for the next days' work though....

  17. Actually it was invented in 1922..

    From http://explanation-guide.info/meaning/Superpower.html

    -----------------------------------------

The term superpower appeared as a neologism in 1922. Prior to World War
II, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Soviet Union, the United States,
and the British Empire were sometimes labeled as superpowers, although
the more common term was great powers.

    -----------------------------------------
    Looks like Des was wrong..
    Again.

Phil Launchbury bored us all completely to death with wittery prose
    along the lines of:
Le Pen would never have been elected. The fact that he went through to
the second round was due to a protest vote from an unsatisfied
    electorate. Plain and simple.

    Cab, Nov 5, 2004
  19. As you did by posting that the word 'superpower' came about in the
    1940's?

So - who had nuclear weapons in 1922 Des? Cos that was when the term
    was invented..
