I've heard this many times, and have no idea what it means. Could someone explain to me a) what 'stabilise the bike' means, and b) how dragging the rear brake in a corner will achieve it?
No and yes (sort of). It's about the only time I ever use the rear brake, in fact. It's something I've picked up from somewhere (fuck knows where, mind) and the idea is that if you've overcooked it on the way in and can't/won't lean the thing any further and are going to run wide, rather than grabbing the front and likely getting intimate with the tarmac, you drag the rear to slow things up and around she goes. Certainly worked for me on a number of occasions, not least of which when being pursued down twisty B road stuff somewhere in Wales by a certain Mr.D.Corden; I got round using the aforementioned technique. Dave, who was carrying slightly more speed than me (in catchup mode) elected to choose the straight on and into a gateway route, although when I initially looked back in my mirrors, all I saw, in horror, was him go sailing straight on and out of my view. :-) On the other hand, if one has a grabby rear brake or a leaden right foot, it can be, er, interesting... HTH.
