Mmmm, if it was electronic, on the Guzzi, it would have been made by
Magneti Marelli and the bike would have a recorded mileage of 8.2 giga
light years and a sort of black splodge, oh, it's come back again, 12
    weeks.

  2. [analysing riding skill]
As someone who only learnt to ride a few (7) years ago I think I'd agree
there wasn't the same introspection. However, I think there seems to be
    a combination of

    (a) more accidents thus creating a pressure for training to reduce risk
    (b) a growing view of biking as a leisure activity so there's
discretionary spending money to chase. Hence more track training, ex
plod advanced training etc. Certainly within 1 hour of passing my test
the training centre were trying to flog me post test training.
    (c) more media exposure about riding skills
    (d) people seem to like getting better and better at things these days.
Society demands perfection (for some stupid reason) so therefore people
will take the time to improve themselves.

While I agree with the "just get on and ride" attitude I've also greatly
enjoyed doing those bits of advanced training I've done. I know I'm way
better than when I passed but I'll never be as good as the really good
riders - which is a shame as I'm a bit of a perfectionist.

It changed hands a while ago. It used to be run by bikers who were
always cheerful, if a bit scatty. Last time we were in there, it was
being run by a grumpy old bloke. Sad, innit?

  7. What are they? lemmings on bikes finding the nearest cliff?
If I was SimonK [1] I'd be selling the RSV.

I think it stabilizes your nerves far far more than the bike imho, the
worse handling a bike seems, the more nervous you are, the more you
use it. Surely the throttle controls the suspension far more than the
    rear?

When i'm not confident on a bike, the right foot declares independence
and starts using the rear brake. I hate it when it does that.

I'm not sure if this comes from being a driver first, but i learnt
pretty quickly leaving your right foot over the lever, is a recipe for
locking the rear, which is rarely a good thing[1]

Joe McG fascinated us all by saying...
I broke both mine when I went through a 3 inch thick oak door backwards
at 50 mph. I was wearing a lightweight cotton harrington jacket.

I broke a few other bones that night too.

I've been tempted. I also get tempted for overtakes until I remember
the "go" pedal only does small values of go. In those situations I can
think about "if I was on the bike". I don't know how people cope
    without a bike.

Oh, sorry mate. Wasn't thinking there.

The same woman (though not behind the bar ATM) has been there since I
started going, so that's about two years... she's friendly and seems awake -
but I haven't seen her serving in ages.

The blonde one they have at the moment serving in the 'biker' bit truly is
something else though... it took Katie about 10 minutes to get a coke for
    her and Steve...
and then she was *very* deliberate in putting together the truly taxing
orange juice and lemonade I asked for. At least she didn't put the ice cube
she dropped on the floor in my drink, though I think she was considering it.

you're thinking of the clavicle, shorely...

at least, that's the bone that went "ping" when I fell off a kerb and
took the full landing weight on my (rigid) arm.

The Spanish, I suspect the Italians [1] and Sussex Police used to, (IIRC
    G5's and T3's).

[1] I suspect them of a lot of things, they may have to fall out of a

I actually knew about the Italians, having owned a model of a
Ital-plod Guzzi as a sprog. I had made the (duh) mistake of assuming
your bike was ex-*UK*-plod, and couldn't think of any forces that
would have used them (although you've pointed one out). I hadn't
considered the possibility that yours was not a UK bike.

Loads of 'em used to some years back, including quite a few yank ones
(well, they'd be fast & reliable compared to Hardly's, wouldn't they?)
