Anyone able to check out a bike in Oxon?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by FrJack @ work, Nov 18, 2005.

  1. I've spotted a bike I'm seriously interested in buying. It's located in
    South Newington OX15.

As I live in the frozen north, would anyone possibly be able to do me a
huge favour and check it out, for me, please? In the next couple of
days would be good, as I suspect this bike may go quickly.

It would be most appreciated and suitable recompense arranged.

If you can help, drop me an email to:
MARK.O' (my work addy) **AND** copy it
    to frjackukrmATgmailDotcom.

    Mucho appreciated.

I might be able to on Saturday morning. Of all things, I'm going to
pick up a bike for Timo at great Missenden - not too far away - and I
suppose could detour a bit afterwards. Emailed.

  4. Is that from Mr. WeLoveBikes? I've had a couple of bikes from him.
It seems that the other chap can get there before I do (I'm working on
    saturday), though.

'Tis indeed. Care to offer an opinion? I guess it will be positive, if
you've had more than one bike from him.

Yes, all sorted and arranged with one ToG, of this parish. Thanks for
    replying, though.

  7. As long as you don't mind his "sold as seen" terms then he is OK. I had
a Trident off him which was fine for a couple of years before the engine
blew up*, and also a Suzuki GS125 for the other half (she was happy with
it). He tracked down the GS125, MOT'd and delivered it, which was nice.
You're welcome - glad you got it sorted.

    * It was one of the earliest silver-engined ones, and so quite old.

If there's anything to be aware of, ToG will soon sniff it out. He's
    rather good at that.

  9. I did, too.
I'd be surprised if the other one has other similar interests, though.

  10. Thanks. Tog sniffed and it was indeed a bit of a woof-woof.

Very clean, very shiny, and the engine sounded great. Steel brake hoses,
    good tyres, good brake pads...

    But:-

Left-hand exhaust can rotting out at the end. Right hand can bulging so
    not long for this world.

Crack on the speedo housing, correspoinding crack on fairing by it, and
scuff on mirror - all pointed to it toppling over at some point. Not
    serious.

    Battery utterly shagged.

Worst of all, the fuel tank had gone the way they all go - it had
already been repaired at the bottom, on the left-hand side, *twice* -
once right at the back, where they always rust through, and once by the
fuel tap. On the right-hand side, the paint was bubbling, so it was
about to let go there as well.

New fuel tank time - not even worth looking for a good used one as they
    *all* rot.

So, something like £400 for a tank (at a guess), £40 for a battery,
couple of hundred for silencers (maybe pattern cans for slightly less) -
all of a sudden it didn't look like a bargain any more. It looked like a
    money pit.

The bloke's running a bike shop from his front drive - he had more bikes
than I've got! At least a dozen. What pissed me off is that I'm sure he
was well aware of the faults on the XJ. He was just counting on some
punter not being too savvy, especially where the fuel tank was
    concerned.

That nose never fails! Cheers, mate!

If I'd have traveled there, myself, I'd have held him upside down until my
    petrol costs were forthcoming.

A wee bit naughty - those omissions and Milo's nod to the "sold as seen"
terms should have raised more concern that it actually did.

I've been having a search, since, and chanced on a 900 Divvy on ebay.

Handy that the seller is just up the road in Wigan. Reckon I'll give him a
bell tomorrow and take a look.

I've checked the local press, where he reckons it is also advertised, and
can't find the bugger anywhere - so I have no idea how much he may have
    the reserve set at.

Still, I'm somewhat better armed on this one, having got some info from
the nice chaps on the Divvy group that Danny Deever pointed me at
(cheers!) and info from the earlier Divvy thread.

    Once again, ta muchly, ToG!

  12. Good that you went, then, as I'm sure I wouldn't have spotted the tank.
