Nothing that a bit of compression and autotuning couldn't sort.

no; #2 stepson is off school. I've just put on Mr.Scruff - that saw
    him off.

I've had (Wolfgang Amadeus) Phoenix on repeat for the last couple of
days. The Alex Metric remix of Lisztomania is quite perky.

I've never heard of the former nor claim to have the latter but it set
my spine tingling, which is a good thing.

Distinctive, but give me Tracy Chapman any day.

that's spooky. I was just singing a bit of "Fast Car" a few minutes
ago, in the, err, car, and couldn't remember her name - cheers.

What's wrong with the established scale of defined musical pitch?
You're coming across a bit "Emperor's New Clothes" there, by the way.
Shot to bits with an unfeasibly large (albeit fictional and highly
improbable) automatic weapon? Gets my vote.

I agree. I can't say that I like it, and indeed tend to dislike that
style of voice in most cases, but no, it's not 'out of tune' per se.

go away and listen to something like Thievery Corporation's "Satyam
Shivam Sundaram" and then come back to Florence and see who's out of
    tune.
I must have been listening to alternative tuning for too long - it
    sounds fine to me.

really? I'm not /advocating/ Florence - I've only ever caught the odd
track online or on live TV (I only "discovered" her through her cover
version of Lightspeed Champion's "Galaxy of the Lost" (which I'm sure
you'd *love*!!)) and I don't even like this song, but really, there's
    nothing wrong with her pitch.

Nowt wrong with the western scale, but I just love fucking with musos

Believe it or not, I'm not completely ignorant of the subtleties and
nuances of microtonality. It's used, albeit often without overt
knowledge of it, in many a guitar solo in rock and blues, right back
to the great Robert Johnson (if not further, from roots in early
jazz). It can mark the difference between a virtuoso, yet utterly
sterile performance [1] and a simple but evocative piece worthy of a
true master [2]. I'm also aware that many singers/writers (usually
outside the simple "pop" genre) make great use of it too, to
complement and enrich the otherwise "conventional" musical notes they
use as their foundation. I just don't like it when it's the primary
form used, as in some avant-garde stuff.

I don't have perfect pitch, although I've read that some people can be
trained to it, but I think I've got a reasonable ear for music as I
understand it, having attempted to learn the trombone at school [3]
and studied music at O-level [4].

I may come across as ignorant and boorish at times - usually because I
am, before anyone else says it. I'm not entirely closed-minded,
    though.

BTW - Lightspeed Champion's "Galaxy of the Lost" - the band and title
alone sound totally appropriate for UKRM, on many levels. I'll have to
investigate that one. - Ok, having done so, my mind is boggling! Quite
listenable, although I can't say the lyrics do a lot for me (a friend
of mine has a theory that lyrics are only there so the singer doesn't
have to go "la la la" through the whole song. I'm beginning to
subscribe to that). Something of an /enfant terrible/ of indie?

[1] Most "shred/power metal", although I do have time for that.
    Dragonforce, anyone?
[2] Joe Bonamassa comes to mind, IMHO.
[3] My teacher said I'd never make a great technical player, like one
of my then co-students, but that I had far more "feel" for the music -
    if that makes sense.
[4] I said studied. Don't ask what grade I got.
