It's the 1150 too.I know most here hate BMW, but these seem a nice big old tourer.Or is it just a case of avoid BMW again? I don't want a new BMW everagain, but something like this could be a nice old bus.Come on, please give it to me & don't pull your punches.--'Chill Winston.......'NigeSubaru WRX (54)Land Rover Discovery II (2001)BMW GS1200 (2007)Honda CBR900RR Fireblade (1997)

Yeah, that was one thought, but that can be sorted by him if he wants
    to sell it.

I really don't know what to do at the minute, I have the blade for fun,
but nothing that can distance & comfort well.

I even thought about a Transalp or an Africa twin, I'm not going to buy
another new bike just yet. If is did buy new, the KTM Advernture 990
high seat is lovely, but the seats not that great.

    I'm just toying with ideas.

OK, Normally that might, just might, be worth a punt at two grand. It's
covered enough miles to prove it's reasonably together. It's well
    equipped.

    But - it's a trader. It's got a very short MoT. And there's a huge
service bill looming, as it's due a major overhaul, if the last service
was 12k miles ago. That and whatever it'll need to get through the next
MoT (I notice the seller doesn't mention the state of the tyres or pads
etc) might, in fact probably will, leave you little change from a grand.

So now we have an early model RT at three grand. And that's definitely
    into "Hmmmmm...." territory.

If you want a lardy tourer, why don't you do what a surprising number
of folk here have done, myself included, and seek out a really good
K1100LT? They're equally well equipped, and there just aren't any
reliability issues with them. Yes, they're dated, but Christ, they do
the job they were built for.

  5. Well, Hog seems to regret having sold his. Scraggy's one and mine were
both on last weekend's French Run. Timo's got one, though that might be
    a disincentive.

The problem is that most have got high miles (70-80k or more), though
they'll easily do double that. Look for one with under 40k on the clock
for round about 2.0-2.5k and you're laughing.

I'll have a gander about. I noticed a green one on the pics, looks a
    tidy old bus.

As TOG already mentioned, the guy looks like a trader masquerading as a
private individual. It's also got what I read as incomplete service history,
which I find worrying on a bike like that. BMW Tourers like this are
normally owned by people who look after them, which would normally mean
a big wad of receipts to go with the bike and a complete service history.

Not to mention that if it was last service a year ago you're looking at
the annual service on top of all that, which will make it even more
expensive. He's also very quiet on the number of previous owners...

I'd give it a miss - with that kind of mileage and the location it's
probably been owned by someone who was commuting to London on it and
skimped on the maintenance. That would be the positive interpretation as
it looks a bit too nice to have been couriered.

.... or just about to fall apart. I had an 1100 RS (later sold to
Petrolcan) with slightly lower mileage and that needed quite a lot of
parts changing. Never missed a beat, though.
It's actually fairly basic - heated grips, I think all of them had an
electric screen, which leaves the ABS as the only real optional extra.
.... and they're a bit more manoueverable than the R1100/1150s IMHO.

Oi! You think you're safe over there or what? :)

Timo's actually using one on a daily basis - I put on something like
2k-2.5k since I bought it and it seems to be behaving itself, give or
take a few smaller issues and the fact that it now wants a rear disk
    because the original is warped.
AFAIK there are several around in the States that have done 250k+ on the
    original engine.

The only real weakness I'm aware of is the gearbox - well, the splines on
the input shaft, actually. Especially if the bike hasn't been used for a
while and the splines are dry, rust can/will develop and you're looking
at a sticky clutch. The splines have also been known to wear, and the
signs are the same - clutch won't disengage properly (you have to blip
the throttle to get it to disengage) and changing gears down suddenly
becomes a pain in the backside. Mine is suffering from the presumed
rusty splines somewhat and it's getting on my nerves a little - I guess
once I've digested the cost of the car respray that Beav's doing for me
I'll have my tame BMW specialist look at sorting this out.

The main problem with sorting it out is that BMW built these bikes by
hanging the clutch into the middle of the room and then build a bike
around it (that's actually the same with the oilhead boxers), so just to
get the clutch out and back in is a huge job - something like a full
day's work. And thus, not cheap at an independent and positively
expensive at the local BMW dealer.

All in all they're very good mile eaters, come with useable luggage and
go on forever if looked after properly. The latter is both important and
not cheap, plus you need someone who really knows these bikes. That
said, general home servicing is pretty simple on them.

A friend is selling a 2000 Transalp XL600V with 6210 miles. I'd say its tidy
enough without being immaculate. Its dark blue or dark purple and silver.
Probably has minimal service history as he's only covered about 300 miles on
it the past 4 years! He was asking me today what its worth as he's going to
get rid of it, I've really no idea. So valuations please.

How shall I say this without ruffling feathers?

Ah, yes, here we go: get a fucking proper newsreader that's built for
the fucking job, not a cut-down, worthless sack of shit that just
happens to do it for a sideline.

Agent, Gravity, XanaNews spring to mind as being popular, free and
functional. Go on, you know you need to.

Well I would, but OE is the most popular one used on here so in order not to
upset the ratio, I decided to go with the flow.
I've used. XanaNews and couldn't live with it and Agent I thought was total
    crap.

While I liked XanaNews, it appears to be throwing something of a hissy
fit at the moment[1]. I may try reinstalling, but failing that it's
    back on the newsreader-roundabout.
