Any Police officers or lawyers here?

I was the victim of a hit and run in December - http://tinyurl.com/28oht .
The following day the police women who attended the scene rang me to let me
know they had caught the driver.

Over the Xmas period I rang the police station to get an update. I was
directed to a section which deals with traffic incidents.

The traffic section said they have my 'accident book' but that it is waiting
to be put on the system. The women I spoke to was unable to tell me when it
will be put on the system. She did say that the investigation will not begin
until the 'book' is on the system and that they have 6 months to complete
    the investigation.

Obviously I am concerned that the 3rd-parties insurer will procrastinate,
    citing the 'on-going' police investigation.

What I want to know is, on average how long do the police take to decide
that they should pursue a prosecution? And how long will they take to
release details of the incident such as details of the witnesses and their
statements (I fractured my arm and was removed from the scene by ambulance
so didn't get witness details but I know there were witnesses who confirmed
the vehicle registration to the police).

If I can get a witness statement from them or details of the witnesses then
hopefully that will help force the 3rd-party insurer to expedite things.

PS. RSS is dealing with this for me but I like to help things along.

Depends on how many witnesses etc and how long they take to fill in
their statements. Normallthe the accident book is put in within the
week and then allow for up to a week for statement requests to go out
to any witnesses. Some people do them immediately whilst some put them
to the bottom of the pile and need chasing up. When they are all
received back a decision is made on prosecution.
Depends on how long it takes to get the statements but a decision is
usually made within 2 months - although the person was quite right to
say up to 6 months is allowed.
Normally both insurance companies will pay for a copy of the accident
file (usually £25 to £50) and base how they are going to fight the
case on the statements from witnesses. Only if there is a disputed
statement will the insurance companies go and get further statements.
