No and no fucking chance. They're dog slow, handle like a hippo on
    acid and look like roadkill.

Never mind. I've just realised that my Italian car has been more reliable
than my German bike. And it's done more miles.

    Well...

My 1985 K100RT has now done 109,000 miles. I've done 52,000 of these in
    the last three years.

In that time I've broken down twice, unfortunately once in France, due
to a problem with the fuel pump wiring.

I've replaced the front disks once (and I think I need to do it again)
and the rear disk once. I've replaced the rear master cylinder.

The starter solenoid has been replaced, as has the 'load shedding relay'
(a normal relay 3 quid from an autoparts shop).

It's needed the gearbox/clutch/bellhousing removed to fix a problem with
the starter; the problem on reflection was probably caused by my using a
too heavy oil in the winter.

I needed to replace the coils this winter since it wasn't running right
    when cold and wet.

Currently the temperature sensor is fucked and I've not found time to
fix it so it's running rich (at least I assume that's why adjusting the
mixture screw doesn't change the CO output.)

Apart from replacing tyres and servicing I think that's it.

All in all, not too bad for a 20 year old bike which is used in all
weathers and only cost 1250 when I bought it.

Unfortunately I think the K100s are drying up, there seem to be fewer
and fewer clean low (less than 70k) mileage ones around.

Still, I've got the K1100LT for the summer (once I've got it put back
together) and since it's only done 40k it's barely run in.

The Fuglipla has done about 75K over the last four-ish years, had annual
servicing and the occasional wash, and hasn't broken down at all.

Come back when it's 18 years old and repeat that feat.

It's not broken down or needed any significant repairs in 75k miles over
    four years?

    Blimey, better than new then.

  12. Well - maybe not 4 years - its done 75K miles in 40 years without a
significant breakdown[1]. Mind you the engine only makes 27bhp so it's
    hardly mechanically stressed..

    Phil.

[1] Still on original engine & suspension. Underbody chassis has been
rebuilt at some point[2] but most of the mechanicals and bodywork are
    original[3].
[2] They all need that Sir
[3] Well - we did get servo brakes installed and it has a heated rear
    screen..

    I don't think so. I'm not anti BMW but that's one model I wouldn't
    even consider.
