Any Labour Party supporters?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Hog, Dec 16, 2003.

  1. There is a difference between dissent and reasoned debate.

The former creates a situation where the government is perceived to be
not in control. The electorate expects the government to be in control
and the opposition to oppose. Electorates have a nasty habit of severely
punishing those parties who become pale imitations of ramshackle student
debating societies - the names Michael Foot, John Major, William Hague,
Ian Duncan Smith ring any bells?

The latter is a perfectly healthy activity provided people accept that
there comes a time for a decision and under democratic principles the
    majority position prevails.

ITYF that come decision time, the PM's position prevails, until
    resignation time comes around.

  6. The worst thing I ever heard Harold Wilson say was "The job of the
opposition is to oppose!" No! The electorate expects their elected
representatives to be an active part of government. It is the gutter
press and their ruling barons who gull the gullible into seeing the
sides of the House as black and white. There are always shades of
opinion within any party, and overlapping wings, but your "opposition to
oppose" tenet means MPs must never express these feelings, they must
    always toe the party line.

Exactly. If the majority in parliament votes down a motion put by the
ruling party, that is the wish of the people, through their elected
representatives, and parliament should act on that decision.

I bet that Just like Tony, all you rebel sons [1] end up being [2] more
like your dad than you'd like to admit to yourself.
