Any gardeners out there?

  1. Buy it at Tesco.

    Much less effort.

I'm not really interested in gardening, but I've got an apple tree out
back. It produces plenty of fruit, which is quite decent. (I don't know
what it is, but it's a bit like a Braeburn.) Unfortunately, by the time
it's ripened most of the crop has been ruined by birds and insects.

Can anyone suggest an effective way of getting a bit more fruit for
myself, without expending too much effort?

IANAE but a tar band is probably the first step, I think it stops
coddling moth larvae or something; followed by diligent use of a
    shotgun.

The last time I read anything about apple trees they suggested that the
birds was mostly going after the insects that were already there and the
best thing to do was plan ahead to encourage more birds this year to
reduce the insects surviving until next year. That and chemicals.

  7. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Verdigris"

Not much you can do to actually scare insects away, but you can apply
    various washes periodically.

Go to your local garden centre, ask for a suitable sticky-band to go
around the trunk and a suitable easy to use spray to keep the buglies
at bay, take their reccomendation... you may need to buy a spraypack,
Hozelock make a number of fairly cheap relliable models, spray when
there is no wind, preferably in the evening...

    nice Prometheus pellets.
