I've got Elite for the PC and, AFAIK, the only options are whether you play
shaded or line-drawn graphics.

I was going to check, but it seems that Vista doesn't support it - all I get
is a message saying "This system does not support full-screen mode". Pah,
progress indeed.

I saw it too. Of course in those days, a few bytes was quite
significant. That 3D monster maze ZX81 game they showed a clip of used
to run in 16K. You wouldn't even see a mouse driver in that filesize
these days.

I remember playing it: it was *unreal* back then.

That's my view. I would sometimes have fun figuring out how to
slingshot around planets & moons to get to where I wanted to be with
the minimul amount of fuel burning. The orbit plotter screen came in
handy here.

I tried the two-week trial and gave up after a week - just couldn't
get into it and I'm quite a game addict. I suspect you have to be into
the RPG thang to get the most out of it, and I'm not.

computational physics lectures in '91-ish.

I don't really want to talk about Lemmings. It took us 4 hours to
install a mouse.

Then we played

Was the only way I could
stand the tedium. I over-did it one day and came very close to plunging
my hand down the cleavage of some girl (who was sat on a chair) while
trying not to fall over. Target fixation, I think.

In '93 I once (also while fairly out of my tree) played civilization
for 12 hours straight, 7pm - 7am.

And Laser Squad, and Missile Command, and Death Race 2000 (in '92), and
various versions of Elite. Then there were the marathon sessions of
Blake's 7, and Dr Who, and StarTrek TNG, and some police drama set in
space, and ged knows what else.

Frankly, with all the computer games, videos, and partying it's a
wonder I got any work done.

Yeah. Half Life was about the end for me. Sort of petered out with some
C+C and Deus Ex.

Then Half Life 2 and I've just not got into anything else.

It doesn't work on XP obv, so I've created a Vmware session with
Windows 98 on my Linux box. Now I'm trying to remember how himem.sys
and all the other memory drivers used to work, so that I can play the
bloody thing!

I /might/ still have a floppy boot disk somewhere with the appropriate
config.sys & autoexec.bat files, if it's still readable.
