Whilst it's obviously very clever to quote someone, can you explain the
context of the quotation, what you think Johnson meant by it and what it
    means to _you_?

No - the context is not recorded
Apparently, Johnson meant "false patriotism" - tho I don't really know
    what *that* means
To me it means that if you can label some action/person as
[un]patriotic, or say, some person as unpatriotic, then a reasonable
discussion about is is no longer possible - the self-fulfilling
satement "patriotism = good" colours the argument so much in most
peoples minds. Hence those in power like to associate patriotism with
    their actions to quell dissent.

"A posteriori" is the key, innit. After the war had been lost and won, the
dissolution was retrospectively declared to have been undemocratic, thus
demonising Vichy. I'm not joining in the Frog-bashing, by the way. It
would have been no disgrace for France to admit that it was crushed by
sudden, brutal and overwhelming odds, and the government of the day had
pragmatically to accede to the inevitable rather than countenance
    unnecessary slaughter.

Only the French could have "surrender contingencies" in their
    Constitution. :)

OK. But that's not a fault of _patriotism_. It's just a tactic some

What do you think patriotism is?

To be honest, I have no idea. Some sort of identification with "this"
group of people over "that" group of people. But it's obvious that
the whole thing elludes me - why should I identify more with the chap
from Blackburn than the one from Nantes, Barcelona or Woolongong?
