    Read the list of ingredients?

Some of the more expensive stuff is longer-lived than the cheapo,
    change-every-year stuff.

Green one tends to have BASF Glysantin in which I've been using for,
oh, fifteen years at least. Works for me and is longer-lived than the
    normal carp.

Mark scribbled on the back of a napkin:
Should be - you need the corrosion inhibitors and it's got to be
suitable for use in an alloy engine.

    Yes it's fine.

I always also use distilled/deionised water as well, rather than
    ordinary tap water.

Stritchy scribbled on the back of a napkin:
Actually that may not be such a good idea as any *decent* antifreeze
contains additional chemicals to neutralised all the harmful crap
    that's in tap water...

Surely it's better not to have the harmful crap in there to start
    with?

Ah, a common misconception (oft repeated in manufacturers' guidance).
What happens is the additional chemicals attempt to remove the harmful
crap (hc) from the distilled/deionised water, *but there's none there*.

This creates so called "dark" or "negative" hc (dhc, or -hc depending).
This is seriously bad juju. Some believe it is what holds the Universe
together. Other believe it's what blocks all the little coolant
galleries[1]. Some believe it eats your soul. But they're just being
    silly[2].

Whatever, one -hd or dhc has infested your engine, it's fucked.

I'll give you a tenner for it.

[1] Will nobody think of the coolant galleries?

Being a man upon whom the God's consistently smile - I believe every
    word that you utter.

Following your advice, in future I'll use only rainwater. I wouldn't
want to upset the balance of the universe, it obviously took you a
while to get it into this finely honed state.

Will that be tenner be cash or cheque?

I've never put antifreeze in any vehicle I've ever owned.

    Is it important?
