    Common mistrake.
Draining the radiator actually drains less than half of the total coolant,
the rest is still in the block. Top up with 50% mix giving a total coolant
    antifreeze content of around 20%.
Some, but not all, engines have a drain plug on the block for this reason.

You are misunderstanding the meaning of windchill.
Windchill is the effective cooling on a hot human body. It cannot make
things colder than they already are, it just speeds up cooling.

See, now you're starting to get the hang of this Usenet thingy - first
wait until at least half-a-dozen other people have made a point, then
post the same thing yourself to make it look like you knew it all
    along.

    Congratulations.

Because the air is at -20C, obviously.

    Duh.

Because that's not how a refrigerator works.

Only similar in as far as warm things are cooled down.

Nice theory, but none of the replies were on my system at the time that
I replied. Just a common usenet propagation issue when a whole flock of
people reply to the same thing.
Do I really need to explain how usenet works ?.

No. Fridges are 'heat pumps'. You'll find that the condenser (those
    external vanes) are really very warm or even hot when it's pumping;
it's the temperature difference between them and the surrounding air
that allows heat energy to be dumped into the environment.

    As the song goes:
    # You can't pass heat from a cooler to a hotter
    # you can try it if you like but you'd far better not-a

  13. Bluecol never was as good as it claimed, that's true. I always used
50/50, but never believed it would protect to the minus temp Bluecol
    said it would.

  15. Or (more accurately) doesn't perspire. Or have a moist skin for the air
movement to induce chilling in through evaporation.

I'll repost para #9 for your benefit:

"Having said that, when I reinstalled the radiator early the next
morning there was a patch of blue ice on the already-iced driveway,
culminating in a little blue twisty stalagmite pointing at the engine
    block drain tap."

The clue is in the last four words.

OK, fair cop guv, but if you read the snipped bits I did start with
the words "Common error" implying thaT I was addressing the general
    case rather than the specific.
