Anti virus recommendations

Hmm, given the recent spate of virus attachments etc going around, and
given the fact that I have received some (but not as many as others, I
haven't even reached 80 in a week unlike some receiving 80 in an hour on
here) emails with virus attachments that *should* have been picked up by
my anti-virus software and hasn't been, I'd like to know what people
    recommend.

Obviously, it would be easier to tell you what we have tried in the house
and it hasn't worked, despite one of them being updated daily..

PC-Cillin. Doesn't do what it says on the tin despite only being updated
yesterday, the online virus scan even failed to pick up the attachments
    on the emails.

AVG/Grisoft. Updated daily since it has been installed, updating the PC-
Cillin anti-virus jobbie this evening resulted in 9 pages of print-out
for virus, including on the boot sector. This software obviously does
naff all. The other pc is on 24-7, how much difference does that make?

We have tried Norton in the past but it just created conflicts on the
    PC's so we gave up.

    Any recommendations?

Switch of preview pane, delete without opening mails from people you don't
know, delete mails from people you do know with suspicious attachments, stay
    away from dodgy websites.

    It's all so easy.

    AVG works for me though.

    *sigh*

You don't really think I have the preview pane switched on do you? My
point is that the emails still get accepted past the anti-virus software
without it picking it up and informing me, and more to the point without
it actually doing its job and getting rid of it, it being updated and
    all.

And no, I am not daft enough to open an attachment if I don't know who
    it's from.
Looking at the print-out from my mums machine, it isn't all that good..

AV software will not stop you from receiving infected emails. It
should however catch the virus attachment if someone is stupid enough
    to open it.
    You sure?

Well, lets say that you install a new anti-virus programme and run it.
You would expect it to pick up any virus that was on the machine, yes?
As did the update with one of them today.

    And AVG didn't.

So, much as I hate to say it, at this point in time AVG is behind PC-
    Cillin.

Anyway's up, I know some peeps say they know they have received such and
such a virus, it isn't happening on the programmes we use. I fear it
might be Norton, but last time it was installed on the puters in this
house it caused nowt but hassle.

Whatever. 9 pages of virus shite printed out after installing and
running, with daily updates, AVG, doesn't exactly inspire confidence in
    it.

Out of curiosity, have you tried seeing what another AV programme picks
    up?

Given that no-one else has mentioned it try using mailwasher
    http://www.mailwasher.net/
It ain't an AV tool but if you set it to trash anything that's not sent to
you spificly it'll stop the crap from getting as far as preview panes etc.

Personally I use Sophos' stuff as AV, but then I know someone who works
    there....

And don't trust e-mail from anyone in the Panther owners club. Me landlord
got one from a member t'other day with no less than 3 different viruses
    in/attached to it!

Kaspersky. Not expensive for personal use

  14. Mailwasher.

    www.mailwasher.net/

The viruses can't cause a problem if you delete them on the server
    without downloading.

I'm getting 20 Security Internet patches a day to this address.

They're all 154kb each - takes less time to preview and delete with
    Mailwasher than downloading them.

Get a decent mail client that doesnt' execute things without you
telling it to. Then don't execute things unless you *know* what they
    are.

  16. Agreed. I still use MailWasher even though I am on Broadband. Works very
    well.

  17. I'm obviously unable to recommend, but I've posted links to independent
reviews on here loads of times. The industry respects organisations like
Hamburg uni and Virus Bulletin (even though it's owned by Sophos).

    Use Google.

  18. Agreed though PC itself does not want to load every time in the last
    week. (Can't find pattern file)_
Norton[1] when I had it installed would only find a virus if I had PC
running as well, then it would find the virus in PC's quarantine
    section.

Norton also caused conflict all over the place. Would 'appear' to
allocate large sections of the common memory to itself causing other
applications to fail. It's "recommended" fixes had to be sorted by hand
after they screwed the system. And their un-install isn't complete and
causes calls to deleted .dlls. In fact I found a NG dedicated to getting
rid of Norton off of your system.

We've been using F-Secure here at work and so far I've been
pleased enough with it ... we're moving to Trend AV (corporate
decision from a new parent company) it too seems to have a good
    reputation.

Agree with you about Norton, I've seen some conflicts and hassles
from it too. Also McAffee AV is a dirty word around here as well
    ;o)

I just downloaded the eval version of Sophos nti-Virus and did the
heaviest scan of my PC I could - no viruses found. 2 reasons for doing
this one of which was to 'prove' that AVG is doing a thorough job of
protecting my system from viruses - so I'd say case proved to my
satisfaction for now - free AVG is definitely good enough.
