Hmmm. Ok, before we have a thousand dweebs flooding the thread with the
obvious question "WTF is a Thrip???" here's what the government has to say.

Thanks Smee, I learned something new tonight. Almost as useful as the
    Australian Idol winner.

Now troll somewhere else ya lunatic!

    You idiot Dave :)
there were literally billions of thrips around this arvo
riding through them is a nightmare and they itch like buggery.
they fly around in swarms and after the rains we have had and the humid
weather we have been having in melbourne they have reached plague
    proportions.
Try riding through a swarm and get back to me.
    Remember to shower first.

    Hmmmm..... I haven't checked with Zebee but I don't think buggery's
    supposed to itch!

Oh, so they're the buggers that are all over my roses. Little buggers, time
to ride the bike [1] to the shops and get some spray. They've already made a
    mess of the climbing rose!

Threat cleared, I think me and my mates pretty much caught them all on our
recent GOR ride coming back at dusk/night time.

I've heard heavy rainfalls with less intensity than the sound of the little
bugs hitting something on me or my helmet. Had to stop every 20Ks to clean
    visors....

That was going by Encarta World English Dictionary 2001's definition:

    ---------------------------------------
    thrips [thrips] (plural thrips) noun

tiny sucking insect: a tiny sucking insect with four long thin wings fringed
with hairs. It feeds on the sap of plants. Order: Thysanoptera

[Late 18th century. Via Latin, from Greek, ‘woodworm’, of unknown origin.]
    ---------------------------------------

Obviously I only made note of the "insect" part :)
