Another tyre thread

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by the man with no idea, Mar 15, 2007.

  1. My current tyres (on a ZR-7) are MEZ4s which went on about 7 months
and 6k miles ago. I now have a front with about 3mm of tread and a
square back with bald bits in the middle - I do loads of motorway
riding. I had wanted 020s but couldn't get any quick enough for an
    MOT.

So is this a no brainer, new MEZ4 on the back? Or just go for a
totally different set - M&P are doing Contiforce pairs for £120? What
I really need at the moment is economy.

Avon Azaro AV45/46STs is what you need. The ones on my Bandit 600 have
been there for 5000 miles and show little signs of wear or squaring off.
They're good enough to do this as well:

Get them from Universal Tyres in Dunstable cos they're a damn sight
cheaper than anywhere else I've seen them. Their eBay shop for pairs of
    Avons is here:

I've just had new tyres fitted to the Daytona wheels by them, excellent
    service and damn good prices.

  3. Thanks for the tip, they sound just the ticket. I still don't reckon
I'll GMKD though - I probably need some lessons from the doctor [1].
    Nice pic BTW.

    letters [2]
[2] Well, I'm just presuming. You know I meant Gower, right?

Wot Loz ses then. I had a pair of Azaro's fitted on his recommendation and
they're proved to be more than good enough for me (I'm a pld fart though,so
that's saying nowt). I've done over 6000 miles on mine and they're not
squared off or worn out, in fact they look almost new. I have a feeling I'll
still have them when I'm a fucking pensioner.

Strange, I was about to ask opinions of the AV45/46 against the BT020.
I get 6-7k out of the 020 on the XJR, but need some longevity for the
    forthcoming 3 month USA trip.

So, in general would I expect

    a) Better mileage ?
    b) Similar grip ?

    Don't
cos you'll ring up to reserve them, drive 45 miles to find that
    they've sold them.

    cunts of the highest order.

I've never had a problem with them. Always been treated well and grabbed
freebies while I'm there - this time a Michelin waterproof jacket
that'll be handy for wearing round the paddock, and a pair of Michelin
badged waterproof RSR bike gloves in gay blue. Last time was two Avon T-
shirts and two pairs of Avon mechanic's gloves.

Better mileage and better grip imo. The AV46ST on the back of my Bandit
600 has been on for about 5000 miles and is not even half worn, and it's
done a trackday as well. Pip rates them, as do a fair few others.
There's one on the back of Pip's RF900 and that I think has done
something like 8000 miles and it's nowhere near worn out yet. Wet
weather grip is much better than the 020, dry weather grip is as good as
any other tyre I've had - I say this because I've never had one slide in
    the dry.

The only two people I've heard of who don't like them are Stritchy and
    Andy Bonwick.

If you fit them, don't go trying to beat the lap record round the IoM 2-
up on a Bandit 1200, they're not really cut out for that sort of thing.

I didn't know you had to actually 'have' something to recognise it as
    being crap.

Well I still have one on the front of the B12 and it;s been fine. Very
good in fact. The rear started out ok then after some abuse lost wet
grip and was junked for an 014.

Said 014 is nearly shot after circa 1500 miles though FFS. There is no
cush drive in the 996 rear end so it is hard on rubber.

I went from OEM BT57 on the Bindit 6 to an MEZ4.

It scared the crap out of me until I sold it.
