Another tour guide question - Germany this time

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by the man with no idea, Apr 22, 2008.

  1. Four of us are off to Germany on our bikes [1] in July. None of us has
ever biked across Europe before so I'm after as much advice as I can
    get.

Here are the the only points that are pretty much set:

Hull to Rotterdam 2100hrs July 5th
We'd like to have a go on the Nurburgring
I'd like to visit Koblenz, Cochem and visit a friend in Boppard
Rotterdam to Hull 2100hrs July 9th.

My instinct is to take it steady and do a relatively small distance
each day, enjoying the scenery. So maybe stop overnight on 6th at
Aachen or Cologne or Bonn. Then on the 7th go round Rhine/Mosel area
and back to Nurburgring for Touristenfahrten at 1715 (if I understand
the official website), sleeping somewhere near Cochem or Boppard. Then
whatever anyone recommends for 8th and journey back on 9th.

Alternatively we could try and make it all the way to the ring
straight off the ferry. I believe it's open to the public all day on
Sunday till 1930hrs. There are 2 potential problems there, Firstly I
don't fancy going round the ring knackered and secondly a knackered
ring. Well, coccydynia actually. I find that on my ZR-7 I have a real
problem in that area after as few as 50 miles and about 100 a day is a
limit. I'd be interested to know if anyone else here has had that
problem and if they found a way to manage or cure it.

So, guidance on routes, good places to see and stop over, pretty much
    anything much appreciated.

[1] I could be riding my mates Multistrada [2].
[2] Or he may insist on me using his Hayabusa till we get to the
    autobahns [3].
[3] Or I may have even got round to buying that ZZR by then.

  2. Thanks for the reply and advice, much appreciated.
Would you suggest that I don't book accommodation in advance?
Do you know how much parking costs and how secure it is?
    Tell me more, please.
This sounds like a nicer ride, although Koeln sounded good, although
I'm not sure my backend is up to it. I guess if we took all day to do
it and made good progress on the motorway it may not be out of the
    question.
I don't understand. I thought it was open to the public at certain
    times only.
Sounds great. Any ideas on cost of boat - so I know how much cash to
take [1]. Also, any specific roads you would regard as 'must rides.'
Very much so, you are a gentleman.

Trier is highly recommended---nice town, decent food, and ten foot
high pictures of Karl Marx on the side of the tour busses.

  7. Which is what I thought innit, you can't just do it any time. I guess
Scraggy meant that if I'm in the general area then I can just pick a
day to suit. Apart from the Sunday (which is all day), it looks like
it's open every evening for the public.

As you're a big fan of the ring you may be able to give me another
piece of advice. A mate of mine stopped in a hotel which he said was
right on the ring and allowed you access at a different point. By
joining there you actually do a lap and a bit because they give you a
ticket to get through the toll once. Sound familiar? A good option?
Looks good, I guess it's worth 60 quid a head. However, there are 4 of
us so, unless someone wasn't interested, we'd have to go in pairs at
90 quid a pop. I'd want to be doing pant wetting speeds to justify
    that for one lap.

  9. Well as you were the first to offer assistance I might see what I can
do, not sure how I'd get it to you though. Apart from which, you can
tell I'm a cheapskate so it'd probably be the most ropey bottle you've
    ever had - bad sekt!

  10. Yup, especially when on the bike.

Edgars hotel - Hotel an der Nordschleife - Very biker friendly and next door
    to the Breidscheid Entrance.

Any town, anywhere in western europe, will have at least one McDo.
They're more ubiquitous than the clap.
