Hi All Well after an interval of over two years it's good to get back in the saddle again. Last Friday I borrowed a friends pristine condition 35 year old R80 (fully insured) for a gentle ride up to Muswellbrook to see an old friend of mine. Stopped in Wollombi for the obligatory beer and sausage roll and then onwards. Got as far as Broke. I'm doing around 50 as I approach the service/shop and see a white van stopped in front of the firey's place opposite. Not even on the road - stopped on the gravel. As I draw level with him (can you see what comes next kids?) the prick pulls out in front of me. I would have missed him but to make sure he then stops and tries to chuck a U turn in front of the shop. Last thing I remember is thinking "Oh shit! I can't miss him". Next thing I know is swimming up into consciousness and an Ambo asking me stupid questions (do you know what your name is etc). They tried to get a chopper over but to no avail so they road freight me to the John Hunter in Newcastle for X-Rays, CAT scans etc. I get out around 23:30 that night. Upshot is that I have a bruise that covers me from above my waist to just above my knees - a totally purple arse if you prefer. Not a pretty sight - and taking a crap takes an inordinately long time and much planning. But I'm alive and nothing is broken. The bike has a few scuffs and scratched, nothing we can see that is really horror-show at all but given it's age and original condition, there is probably K - k worth of damage. When the cops interview me on Saturday night, they ask me "were you aware that you were technically unlicensed at the time of the accident?" What? Turns out I had paid a speeding fine a few weeks late earlier this year. SDRO vultures had taken charge of it and claim to have sent out an additional .00 "Enforcement Fee" ( another letter I never received). I rang up a couple of days ago, talked to them about it, paid the and according to the RTA, everything is now hunky dory. The van driver has admitted liability to the cops and has (reportedly) been nicked (for what I have no idea). I spoke to him and told him we were getting a quote organised for the repairs and would get back to him in case he wanted to cough up some readies rather than put it through the insurance. Does anyone have any idea of the effect my "technically unlicensed" status might have on the insurance side of this? I'm particularly worried about any medical expenses that may be incurred in the near future, to say nothing about the price of BMW spares. Cheers Nigel.
