Do you think we'll get a day off?[/QUOTE]

Was probably the first question asked in offices up and down the
    land...

I don't, can't remember a thing about it. I do know I was in the local
library when Andy and Fergie got married though.

We were doing the catering for the evening bash - an interesting and
informal crowd. I very nearly flattened HRH with a large ice tray. . .

I can. I was on an archaeological dig and apart from one radio which someone
was allowed just for the ceremony there was nothing, no papers, no radio.
    Bliss.

I can't. I was 7, and had my tonsils removed the day before.

You're right. Russia 'got rid of' its monarchy too.

    AOL.

And I'm already fed up with the wall-to-wall media coverage.

I wish they'd just tell me if I'm getting a day off, and when, and
    leave it at that.

    Bread and circuses innit.
King Billy and Catherine the Great - wonder if the period of their reign
(assuming it happens) will be called "William and Kate" in the future?

Neither do I though I wouldn't go as far as to wish them unhappiness
    personally IYSWIM.

When the story was breaking, some BBC hack referred to her as "Queen of
the Future" which makes her sound like the consort to Ming the
Merciless. I'm afraid that's how I shall think of her from now on.

Guess I'm in the minority then. They both seem like nice people, and
I'm pleased for them. I like having a Royal family, albeit I wish it
was considerably smaller and less profligate than it is, and I think
those two will do it more credit than we've seen for a long time.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-monarchy like Champ, but the coverage
of the whole thing has already got me shouting "enough!" at the radio
    this morning.

We're getting one in 2012, for Brenda's next jubilee. Rejoice!

On a related note, I caught part of the interview with Kate and Willy
last night and noticed she talks posher than he does. Bless.

Marlborough? 15k a year, more like.

She's a commoner because her parents are new money. The mother's an ex-
trolley dolly and the father was a Jeremy Spake-a-like.

I still chuckle when I think of Willy's posh mates muttering "doors to
manual and cross check" behind her mum's back when they turned up to
    society dos.

Isn't that exactly what we might want from a monarch? A pleasant but
    harmless figurehead.

Of course we can. But getting rid of it would decimate our tourism
sector. I'd be interested to see numbers for cost vs income from
    tourism.

After Victoria, the rest of the aristocracy faded into obscurity. The
royals (and 90% of the land) are all they really have left.

If you want a sensible solution, you should be looking at Nagant
revolvers and Mosin-Nagant rifles with bayonets, rather than
    Kalashnikovs.

Eh, why? I'm with Champ on this. Furthermore, the
monarchy is an outdated institution that does ****
all apart from bringing in the tourists.

You're seriously comparing Versailles (a hugely opulent palace complex)
and Neuschwanstein (a Disneyesque fairytale castle) with the concrete
blockhouse full of gaudy tat that is Buckingham Palace?

    Riiight.

I wouldn't give a shit if all of the royals died of cholera tommorrow,
but I can see the value in having them around as a concept.
