another oil thread variation

  1. the endless oil thread appears to have a new variation

fwiw, here are just a few sites that include gloves in their recommended
list of tools for doing an oil change. almost all state the same
reason: old oil is carcinogenic, so avoid contact with it if possible.

a reasonably good summary of the issues with used motor oil can be found
here and it's the same thing.

    http://www.nature.nps.gov/hazardssafety/toxic/oilused.pdf

pages 6-9 sum it up. from page 8:
"Combustion-derived PAHs have been linked to mutagenesis and
carcinogenesis, and some hevay metals have toxic effect. The 4- to
7-ring PAHs have been especially implicated in the carcinogenic effect
    of used oil."
"Perhaps the most unambiguous thing that can be said about complex
mixtures of PAHs and other aromatics found in used oil that is such
mixtures are often carcinogenic and possibly phototoxic."

mmmmm, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, my favorite. I know I mentioned
aromatics the first time this came up.

I don't care if anyone else uses gloves or not but for around 2 bux a
bag for latex gloves at point of sale in Pep Boys, I tried 'em. It's
cheap and it definitely made things faster and easier doing an
inherently messy job. I don't spend every day deep in old oil, but the
benefits of using gloves sure outweigh any downside. If there is a
downside to using gloves, I haven't been able to find it. Maybe some of
these folks who recommend them know what they are talking about after
    all.

Yeah, and Albertson's has a roll of aluminum foil on sale for $1.69
that you can wrap around your head at night and prevent brain cancer
from the many radio waves being transmitted.

    You're an idiot.

I also notice you still haven't corrected the many incorrections to
your story of being on the iron butt site. You're still standing as
    being a liar.

  3. yah, some are just using kitchen gloves, which certainly work. of
course, there was that tv ad a long time ago for the playtex kitchen
glove so thin "you could pick up a dime". If you remember that, you are
dating yourself. the ones i got were cheap surgical latex type that
didn't restrict tactile response and would also make great water bombs.

i carry larger rubber gloves from Grainger that i use as rain gloves
over a normal riding glove, but that's a whole 'nother application
    entirely.

  4. Playtex also makes some fine products "to lift and separate" amongst
    other things.
that's likely where most of the cheapo latex come from, non spec rejects
for medical use. if those nitriles you have are sized XXL, they might
work as wet weather over gloves. put them in pairs and sell'em cheap,
    make some pocket change.
