mate's moped was done. My dad used to let me drive his Austin 1100 around
Pendine Sands when I was 11. When I was 15 I was let loose there,
unsupervised, with an Austin Maxi. Passed my test in it 2 years later.

Yes. I passed my test in May 1980 and took it to a number of festivals as
it was great to sleep in. The Maxi went on for another 5 years as the farm
runabout. My father, who only ever bought unpopular cars that had
depreciated massively, part-exed it for a vile Renault 9. When he snuffed
it in 1988 my mum got rid of that and bought herself a brand new Fiesta.
She also spent about £20k on the house making it look fairly modern rather
than something used as a set for somewhere Siegfried Farnon might visit.
