So a nice CPW chappie sold me a Nokia E71 today. It seemed to get good
reviews on launch. I wanted a qwerty keyboard, a change from Windows Mobile,
something slimmer/lighter than the HTC TynTynII.

Anyone have one and how have you found it?

Getting it from CPW meant it was unlocked and unlike my HTC will take an IoM
sim card in 2009, which will save me a feckin' fortune.

Also a Jawbone 2. Have high hopes for that.

Not yet but apparently I'm getting one from work fairly soon. Our
sysadmin is gradually rolling them out. He reckoned they're the best
business phone you can currently get.

Not any more. I'm post-geek. But I trust my sysadmin and if he says
    they're good, then they're good.

I don't know if we've had them long enough but I'll ask...

.... he says about 10 hours of use, and sheloads in 'standby'

Well it seems great so far and the battery is holding up well, and
that's with bluetooth enabled. Big change from a touchscreen phone,
takes me back to my first Nokia Communicator, but I'm liking it and it
runs quite fast. It has needed a reset though after using the browser
and trying to go back to the menus.

    A T-mobile customer writes...

Ooh, shiny! I quite fancy that. Pity I'm not due an upgrade til next
July. Mind you, it might have stabilised a bit by then.

I've been through FOUR SPV-M3100's in 2 years. Good phone, wears out
    quickly, WinMob sucks some though.

This Nokia is *very* slim and quite light with a durable looking chromed
or polished stainless finish. It seems pretty rugged.

you don't think a <12 hour battery life negates anything else good
    about it?

Yeah, I guess it does. It was the 5 pages of fairly glowing text
before the 12h battery bombsheel - they should have just highlighted
    the battery issue first.

that's El Reg for you - always best to skip to the summary of their
reviews, and then read the full article if you're still interested.

I have had the HTC Touch pro for a couple of months now and it works fine.

    http://www.htc.com/www/product/touchpro/overview.html

Took a week to get used to after my Palm Treo 750 but that's more down to
    me.

It has a stylus but I've not needed to use it since the initial set-up.
My only complaint is it's a bit laggy when it Initially goes into
    landscape mode.

I get a good 24 hours battery life with data push on all the time and
    some pretty heavy call usage.

I'd like to get the standard black HTC theme rather than the red Vodafone
    one.

Ah nice, I nearly opted for that. Two reasons I didn't. It is tied to
Orange and the wearing out/Winmob thing. CPW phones are unlocked.
My IoM roaming bill at the Manx was £375.

Mine's on Vodafone. My IoM bill wasn't too bad - certainly not that high.

The easy answer is to get hold of a cheap phone, unlock it and then
use an IoM sim card in it.

I think you can now buy a sim card for £10 and it's already got £10 of
credit on it rather than the old con where you paid for the card then
paid again for credit. I never bother about using the card every few
months to maintain the number because there's normally only a couple
of quid left on it and I can't be arsed with the hassle.

Last year it was 5 quid for the card loaded with 5 quid of credit.

Unfortunately I turned up there and found my phone was locked to
    Orange...

I've played with a couple now and like them, however you may want to wait
for teh N97 thats been announced

    http://allabouter6.com

Think N95/6 with a qwerty and touchscreen.

    Looks nice, good spec, etc
