Can't remember as I was taking cash the last time - do the peages on
the autoroute take plastic or do I have to wave Euros?

  2. They take plastic, yes. Even English plastic.

Needing neither signature nor pin. Quickest and easiest way to use the
    pay booths.

Sorry if this is a duplicate - got an error when I tried to post the
    last reply.

They won't accept credit cards for charges less than 5 euros.

I did a short peage stint, arrived at the booth all happy 'cos I'd got
my credit card, then had to rummage for around 3 minutes trying to
find some cash as the total cost was only 3 euros.

Three minutes turns out to be an embarassingly long time when you are
at the front of a queue of five cars all waiting to go through the ony
    open pay booth.

They can't allow you to slip off to one side and let others through
while you rummage either. Something to do with "I've started, so I'll
finish," on the transaction front presumably.

But bear in mind that they won't take plastic unless the cost is over
    5 euros.

    Shortish, possibly interesting story:

Did a short peage about three years ago from Calais to somewhere with
a new tankbag, which conveniently has a nice velcro pocket on the
trailing end just the right size for a peage ticket and credit card.

    "Bingo," thinks I.

Shortly after this I make the interesting discovery that velcro
doesn't stay shut at motorway speeds.

Feel a tap on my chest as the flap blows open, instinctively smack a
hand there and find I've caught my credit card.

The peage ticket, however, is history.

Get to pay booth, explain I've lost the ticket. Booth lady says I've
got to pay the full whack for the whole motorway section, and it's a
    whole 3 euros.

Wouldn't take the plastic (still glad I caught it though...) so I have
to dig around in the depths of my bag for some cash, causing quite a
queue to build up behind me (it was the only booth open, late at
night, and I wasn't allowed to move to one side to let anyone through
as she'd already started my transaction.)

    Ho hum.

Moral of the story: put some cash in an easily accessible place as
    well as the card.

    Yes they will.
Where was this? And when? I suppose it could be down to differences
between Credit cards and charge cards, but I doubt it. Maybe they just
had a problem with your card or something.

They do have the signs saying 'no entry' to motorcyclists for this
    reason.

Calais towards Le Havre, probably past Boulogne. TBH I can't actually
remember. It was dark and foreign anyway.

    And about three years ago.

Deffo not a card problem. Boothlady showed a pre-printed sheet of
paper in French and English saying "We won't process credit card
charges for less than 5 euros 'cos it ain't worth our time." sort of
    thing.

If this situation has now changed I'm all for it. Those who've been
to forn parts more recently will obviously know more up to date info.
    I'll shut up.

**** all really thought innit? What is 5 euros these days, about 30
bob and trying desperately to get down to parity with the Almighty
Dollar? You don't buy much with 30 bob, not even in highly subsidised
third world agricultural economies like France.

You could be right in that it's only recently been changed though. But
this would have been at least a couple of years back.
