Are you saying that there is no situation that a rider can not avoid?

If so you a very wrong.

  10. Maybe, I've had that exact same conversation with friends. (Fortunately
for me, my job doesn't require me to see lots of accidents, I get to say
that to friends who _avoided_ an accident through no skill of their
    own...)
Except for the astronomically small only-useful-for-arguing-on-usenet
probablilities, yeah - if I didn't agree with what Shane's saying there
I wouldn't ride a motorcycle. Like I quoted from Zebee upthread, being
hit by an asteroid is an accident, everything else is a fuckup.

  11. Ummm, yes it does. The law deals _exclusively_ with legal issues. If the
law goes against morality or common sense, it's still the law. Surely
you of all people understand this?
Isn't this exactly what a whole section of traffic offences are for?
    http://rta.nsw.gov.au/rulesregulations/downloads/1205_demerits_general.pd
    f

Failing to keep left on a multi-lane road
Not giving way at an unmarked intersection
Not turn left from far left side of road
Not turn left from multi-lane road from within left lane
Drive behind other vehicle too closely to stop safely
Begin U turn without view of approaching traffic
Begin U turn when driver could obstruct traffic
Make U-turn without giving way to vehicle/pedestrian
Not give left change of direction signal with lights
Give left change of direction signal (less than 5 seconds)
Not give way to vehicle/pedestrian (give way sign/line)
Not give way to vehicle on right (unmarked intersection)
Not give way to vehicle (left turn-unmarked intersection)
Not give way to vehicle (slip turn-unmarked intersection)
Drive in right lane on road with speed-limit over 80 km/h

They're all 2 or 3 point offences. If Theo's mum :) drove round in NSW
doing those things all day, surely she ought to run out of licence
points pretty quickly, unless we can "blame the police or RTA" for
selectively applying the rules? There _are_ rules against "creating
situations whereby if it wasn't for the actions of others certain things
would have happened." I've listed a few of them up there.

basically you did. By saying that it is partly the riders fault. Take your
    example
the car that comes out of the side street. goes across two or thee lanes to
    get to
the far lane. you had a car there blocking the view of the driver to the
    bike. you
assume the rider can see the car. what if it was a bus? not many of us have
    x-ray
vision. the driver in the side street that comes out in either situation is
    entering the
road dangerously as he does not have a clear view of the road he is
    entering. He
should be booked for neg driving of danger's driving.

A friend of mine was going home from work on his bike. As he was going along
the was a bus turning right into a side street. as he approached the bus,
    the driver
of the bus waved a car through (which my friend could not see). the car took
my friend out. The only way that that accident could have been avoided was
    if
my friend stoped at the end of the bus to see if any car was coming. luckily
    he
had fast reactions so only came out of the accident with a crook knee.

The road in front of him.

Not from a legal point of view but a survival one.
the bus could have been waiting for traffic going the other direction. It
    was a
very main road. (maronda hwy melbourne). hard to see through a but to
    see what it's waiting for.

    Could he see the
If the driver couldn't see him. maybe his mirrors weren't adjusted corectly.

    In
How could he when it was behind a bus.

    Shop widows?

to far away from that section of road. If you had been to melbourne you
would know that some wide roads have service roads. which means that
even if he did look in a shop window (20m away from the road) which I
don't think there was just houses. all he would have seen was a bus.

    There are some pretty useful
    You must travel very slowly.

I don't find it draining, I find it quite enjoyable to tell

  17. Well, no... All of us see heaps of other people (drivers _and_ riders)
getting away with that sort of thing all the time. Yeah, they don't
always cause accidents, but my gut feel is that I'll probably encounter
at least 3 or 4 of the things on that list every single trip into work.
Hell, I'll be honest and admit I don't think I _ever_ give at least 5
seconds of indicator when turning left. I surely don't when changing
    lanes.

People "don't care" about things like this, 'cause we all _know_ the
police never pull you up for it.

Just because they don't happen to cause an accident, doesn't mean they
    haven't committed the offence...
