FWIW, I'm in agreement with Big here.

Maybe, Shane's past (along with Spooky) coloured our reading of his
    original post. <shrug>

Maybe, with the passage of time, we have all become slighty wiser and
    cooler, to match being older.

I am interested in Shane's comments about training motorcycle riders,
but, there is always the caveat that what works for a cop, on a big bike
with lights and horns, and a pistol on the belt, may not translate
directly to a nervous beginner on a 250 or a wee scooter.

I'd like to think that quite a number of the rest of aus.moto would
    share that interest.

Quite a few of us who have hung out here for a while have managed to
(relatively) peacefully co-exist, despite differences of opinion.

For example, one of our number thinks XXXX is beer. ;-)

If Shane wants to ride about with his headlamp on all the time, bloody
    good luck to 'im.

OTOH, if he wants to wander in stating that anyone who doesn't ride with
their lights on is a fool, and here's a URL to prove it...
well, there will be a heated discussion.

Like it or not, aus.moto _is_ like a clique, or community,or tribe, or
whatever, and those wishing to join _do_ have to adjust to the
staggering rate of flipping between serious discussion and total
    hyperbole of insults.

Even Allen Kirk _could_ if he wanted to, fit in.

Certainly we do need a better front gate built.... ;-)
but the place is open for anyone.

    Forest, Shane, not trees.

The problem isn't that you disagree with people. The problem is that you
    spout crap.

It's not you, personally. It's the positions you hold and the evidence
and techniques you try to use to back them up.

    Get it?

Mhm, I can quite confidently say that every time hs trots out his usual
bullshit and puts up his usual rote-learned "What-would-you-know?"
obtuse defence of it, he convinces me he's a nob-end all over again.
Seeing how the fat, bored, retired, Shane of 2006 reads just like the
Shane of 2001, it's a fair bet that isn't true in at least one case...
I might be, too, if what he had to say wasn't so obvious and his
    delivery so condescending and self-important...

    ....I mean, "cyclists"?

Not so to both..... The over 40s are not dying in great numbers,
there's more karking it because there's more of them. Baby boom!

The under 25s are still falling over lots...

I smashed my coffee-plunger when I crashed coming back from the GP.
That'll learn me for not using a genuine BMW-Motorrad one!

Bugger me this communication game has fleas on it ! I could have sworn
that's what I said above (that the numbers are up because of swathes of
returnees buying their first bike in several decades and promptly
    wadding it)
And that will never truly change, I fell down lots at that age too (and
the 2 decades I was riding before that as well). Young dumb and full of
    cum...

No, because they are crashing in fewer numbers for their number of
    licences.

They are having fewer crashes than they are increasing in numbers.

It also isn't possible to know if they are returning, that data just
isn't there. It's a popular belief, but it's just not known.

I'm inclined to think not, because I don't think there were that many
fewer in the younger age groups 5 or 10 years ago.

About the only reliable info known about older riders is that they are
mostly single vehicle crashes and younger are mostly SMIDSY, but that
could equally be explained by them having traffic smarts so surviving
to get into the country, and by the younger riders not riding in rural
areas as much, getting snotted in town before they get to the twisties...
Yup. See them all the time playing silly buggers on the weekends.

What I want to see (and what the MCC may be able to provide once Liz
has done her thing with the latest data) is what the scooter crash
    rate's like.

Are they crashing at a rate level with their increase in
registrations, less than, more than? I see them doing some rather
    energetic manouvers in traffic.

Older riders are doing many more miles these days, look at the membership of
Ulysses, lots of early retiree boomers getting bikes and having lots of time
and disposable income to use them.

I do not ride very much in the city but when I do wheel the bikes out it is
generally for a 3 day or longer run into the country with 800-1,000
    kilometre days being the norm.

Younger riders are more likely to use bikes for commuting than boomers who
have the disposable income to have a car as well.
