I have a cheapo angle grinder that requires a special tool, basically a
strip of metal with a couple of prongs, to change the discs. Obviously I
have long since lost the special tool and it now resides with all my chuck
keys and other vital bits of kit.

Does any one have a clue how I can remove the disc without the tool?

Nope, any angle grinder will do.

A disc cutter would be more effective though.

Buy a new one from B&Q then take it back because there is no key in the box
    [1]

[1] This is *not* a serious suggestion. [2]

[2] Gong to B&Q and asking to buy a spare *is* a serious suggestion

Push in the little button thing at the back which locks the spindle, then
with your hand safely inside an old bike glove, get hold of the disc and
    twist anticlockwise.

    Works for me.

Infact I don't even bother with the glove 'cos I'm that hard.

  15. There's one of those in this house too.

only he was wearing gloves. what he had done was to run out of 4 inch
disks so removed the safety guard and fitted a five inch one.

he now has a huge gash in his finger.

Sounds like a perfectly good idea to me.
Just cos it didn't go quite according to plan, doesn't mean it wasn't a
    good idea.
