I lived in Wales for a number of years and still visit friends regularly
and can't recall that happening, certainly not as a deliberate act. I'm
not saying it doesn't happen but its not something I've experienced.

I lived in a Welsh Welsh area and always felt a little ashamed I made
little or no effort in learning any Welsh.

When I was approached and asked, in Welsh, train times or whatever I
don't know who was more embarrased, me for not speaking it or them for
assuming I could.

 

when I was at QUB, in lectures, the gaelic speaking students would
regularly speak to each other from the row in front of me to the row
behind, if you see what I mean.

 

In Pwhelli, Dolgellau and parts of Aberystwyth they were speaking Welsh
before I went in ...

South Wales doesn't seem to have as many Welsh speakers as mid Wales and
the North.
