Just watched the CB500 disappear down the road so am about to start looking
    for my next bike.

Apart for the early days I have now had the following:

    Naked Bandit 600 (RED)
    Likes: power, seating position, looks.
Dislikes: weight, revviness[1], popularity (every buggers got one).

    Naked CB500 (Blue)

    Likes: weight, manoeuvrability, flexible power[2]..
Dislikes: looks, looks, skinny tyres, looking like I had just passed my
    DAS[3].

    So what next?

[1] Is that a word? just seem like I didn't have to give it a handful every
    time I pulled away.
    [2] Newbie opinion.
[3] I'm a whimp that likes to look mean.

Sv650 would seem to be the obvious choice.

Didn't we go all through this a couple of months ago? Your criteria IIRC
were quite stringent - not too tall, not too heavy, upright riding
position etc. What else was left on your shortlist after the CB last
    time around?

Take it a bit easier with the clutch next time, and pick your feet up.

how many "which bike should I buy" posts are you going to make, guy?
It's like you can't make up your own mind or something.

However, based on your descriptions of what you liked/disliked about
the two bikes you've had, it seems fairly obvious that you should try
an SV650 (the unfaired one has a more upright seating position that
might suit you) and a Hornet (though this will be just as revvy as a
600 Bandit, it'll have a lot more power).
Alternatively, my '01 Fireblade's up for sale...

    Sounds about right.
See if I can book a test ride on an SV650, most dealers only have the 'S' as
a demo unfortunately, still no hurry, weather is crap.

I've never ridden one, but people who have/have had SV650s seem to rate
them. The unfaired one is pig-ugly in my opinion, but it would probably
suit you better if you like an upright sitting position.

So you don't fancy a Fireblade, then? 4500 quid to you, guvnor.

You like the power, but not the revs: big torquey twin might do it. All
bikes are heavy, but how they carry it makes a difference. F'rinstance, the
Trophy and the Drifter had the same dry weight, but the Trophy felt like
twice the weight because it was so top-heavy. You want something a bit
different, chunky tyres, low CofG, prolly no more than two cylinders, larger
capacity. You don't say what your budget is, or your intended usage.

    A few suggestions:
Nigel Eaton's trying to shift his hippo:

I'm planning(ish) to part with the Drifter (£2K to you, squire):

Nah, sports bikes ain't my thing and I quite agree the Naked SV is a little
on the ugly side... hopefully my good looks will offset this.

You could probably do worse than spend some time flicking through
http://www.bikez.com/categories/index.php to get a shortlist of what
suits your weight/power/styling criteria, then maybe ask here for any
real world experience of particular models.

    Ta for the suggstions.

I was thinking of looking at an old (86) and cheap Virago XV400 tonight but
have a feeling this could be a bugger to get bits for.

It would have done as a fill in till I got something newer.

The tyres on the SV are probably too narrow.

    That said, I was/am considering a bike with a 150 profile rear.

Plenty of XV535s going cheap , and they would be much easier to get bits
    for.

Having said that , do you plan on keping it long enough to do any servicing
    on it?

Mike at the Black Horse has a Virago 535 for sale with 83 miles on.
I looked it over at EOSM. It looks brand new.

    Reasonable money too. 2950UKP
