And still it clicks and ticks.

And we're not talking clocks. My bike is still making a clicking, ticking
sound when I start it up despite having just done the shims on the fucker
last night. This noise would appear to be coming from the right hand side
of the bike and in the area of the cylinder head. This was the side I found
two shims that the gap was slightly over spec. Yipee, thought I.

It clicks and ticks away from cold for anywhere between thirty seconds and a
couple of minutes. It then becomes barely discernible in amongst the usual
valve and camchain rustle and exhaust noise or disappears completely.

I was beginning to think that I had possibly a bent valve or a broken valve
spring, but this would make a noise all the time surely?

Is it possibly the camchain tensioner that I should investigate next?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated as it is doing my head in. It has
sat in my garden for three months and been turned over at least once a week
for about ten minutes a time and had three (44 very cold miles) journeys to
    work.

It's pissing me off because I should be out there riding it but want to
track this problem down before it gets worse.

My CBR600f did the same, cam chain tensioner was the culprit
dunno if the XJ is similar

Quite a lot of engines produce a ticking sound when cold, and then it
goes away when warm. It's harmless. It could be a slightly sticking
    camchain tensioner, in this instance.

Ear plugs in, lid on and JRTFT[1]. Works for me.

Maybe a slightly sticking valve? Run some redex type stuff and see if
    that helps?
Strip, clean and lube. That's what I did with my Bandit one which seemed
to get stuck once or twoce. I ended up swapping it out for a manual
    version.
    Of course..

is it a click or a phut phut type of noise but very like a click ?
Could be a lose plug or a small blow in the head gasket

I have considered this possibility. I had an old GSX250 that did this with
a very slight blow in the exhaust gasket. I don't think it is, but it's
such a bastard to track down exactly where it is that I haven't ruled it out
    yet.

ISTR it goes away when you pull in the clutch.

It could be a gubbed gasket at the carb rubber/engine block face, with
the engine running from cold, get a rag soaked in petrol and squeeze it
over each gasket, if the revs increase then you have a dodgy gasket
which is sucking in air, if not then try something else.

Easier and greener - squirt WD40 at the carb rubbers.
