An especially stupid bit, right at the end. If you've got a spaceship full
of pernicious alien lifeforms travelling at c-fractional speeds, the /last/
thing you do is T-bone the densely-populated homeworld with it. Anyone with
intellectual faculties above the fundamentalist level would run it into the
    sun.

Don't remember that bit at all. Still, it wasn't one of the best Alien
    films.

And yes, obviously the sun would make more sense.

I have found both C+E and the IR to be singularly helpful *every* time I've
talked to them. And boy did I have some stupid questions.

I think very few people "like" smoking, in the same sense that they
    like getting pissed.

And before we get into an esoteric argument about the meaning of
"like", my point is simply that, alcoholics apart, the mechanisms that
cause someone to have a jar or two and a smoker to light up are very
    different.

Mostly, they're just people who work for the government. If you're civil to
them, they're fine. If you don't file tax/VAT returns and don't
communicate, they've got to do something to prod you awake...

Makes perfect sense. Most people are just people IYSWIM.

Must get my corporate tax done :)

I really see the two as completely different. What will happen
eventually will depend on whether the majority in the long term see it
my way or yours - and we'll probably both be long gone by then.
Well as long as you're not tempted to tuck in let's call it a day at
    that!

Do you mean that you believe alcochol will eventually be illegal
anyway, or that it will only be made illegal if tobacco is? If the
latter then I don't see the connection between the two.

That's far from a logical consequence.

I would too, in private, but only (as I said in another post) if we
could think of a way of simultaneously preventing kids from smoking.
Where you and I differ is that, as I can't think of a way of banning
just kids, I think we ought to ban everyone. IMHO addicted kids is
just too high a price to pay for adult freedom - particularly as I
suspect that, if people weren't allowed to smoke until they were given
an informed choice as adults, I suspect very few would take it up.

Woooah there, easy Colin. You carry on with that kind of bolshy talk and
you'll end up sounding like you're promoting social responsibility over an
Individual's Rights. Those kids have the right to support their government
whether or not they think they choose to.

Well yes, you're right of course. All of this is to happen after I
don't need their taxes to subsidise care in my old age.

  15. Oh I dunno - you could ensure you hit the bit where the stupidity index
has gone above the GWB level. That ought to absorb some of the impact..

    Not necessarily:

Aziraphale: "Asteroid strike? Quite the fashion these days, I understand.
Strike into the Indian Ocean, great big cloud of dust and vapor, goodbye all
    higher life forms."
    Crowley: "Wow."
Aziraphale: "Doesn't bear thinking about it, does it."
Crowley: "All the higher life forms scythed away, just like that."
    Aziraphale: "Terrible."
Crowley: "Nothing left but dust and fundamentalists."

OI! You can't do that! Just walking away from an argument because you
know we won't agree is not on, old chap.

I genuinely would like to know why you feel, so strongly, that most
    smokers don't actually enjoy it.
