Of this I have no doubt. I am still surprised that some of the businesses I
work for keep doing well, depsite being polited by idiots. They must be
doing something right (apart from their choice of IT support, obviously)

Case in point, that 'jeremy's farm' programme. Caught a couple of
episodes on UKfood and it was a disaster, trying to do non essentials
before essentials, no clear product knowledge, staff hired because
they were mates rather than on experience, no sales experience, nowt.

I was thinking this is all going to go horribly wrong then they
mentioned his mate jamie Oliver was coming around to open the Essex
Pig Company store. Once again not what you know but who you know?

Last one I saw, they seemed to be making money hadn over fist. Which could
    bear out your point.

I can see it. If it can begin to become socially unacceptable in a country
raised on images of Bogart and the Marlborough cowboy then it can here.
Especially as we're in turn so heavily influenced by US influences. With a
cursory look at US smoking stats apparently the percentage of smokers has
roughly halved among American men since the 60s and it's the same here- from
51% to 27% since the mid 70s. Sooner or later it could become a vote winning
issue and bear in mind the majority of smokers are in blue collar
    industries.

More to the point, how many sci- fi shows have people drinking and smoking?
Sure they had fags in Alien and they got pissed in Star Trek- but neither
    was on Earth.

  11. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
From what I've seen it's the tendency to dip the till and draw living
expenses from working money. The small businessmen I've known who made a
success of things in various startups lived on a shoestring for the
    first year or three.

Statistics have it that those who take notice of the free professional
advice double their chances of success by simply doing so. Experience

your chances even more, especially if you are in some form of

I learnt that to my cost.

The one thing all these "entrepreneurs" are though, is charismatic.
They have to be in order to get sensible people like bank managers to
lend them **** loads of money that they have no intention of ever
paying back and then buggering off to Spain and leaving their company
    to go down the pan.

Sarah's at the sharp end of this, and it's absolutely right. The number of
people who put funding directors' salaries and company cars ahead of paying
the IR and C&E is extraordinary. Also those who clearly believe paperwork
    is beneath them.

And those who go under owing the taxman tens of millions of squids are the
ones who won't talk to their tax office. When they don't file an adequate
return, the taxman has to estimate. The muppets don't phone up and say,
"This is wrong, I only earned x last year", do they? Nope, they put it on
the bottom of the pile and hope it goes away. So they get charged interest
on the tax estimate, and similar next year plus penalties. And the year
after. Suddenly, they owe billions, because they don't[1] talk to the
taxman. The Inland Revenue isn't allowed not to ask for tax. You don't get
let off because you pretend you don't know.
