Despite having my lefty hat firmly on during part of this thread I'm not
averse to making a bit on my savings by hanging on to the capitalists'
coat tails. The Shiver was purchased with the proceeds of investing in
an ISA totally committed to the Aberdeen Far East Emerging Economies
(excluding Japan) fund. A bit of a nervous time for a while, but I held
my nerve until last month when I decided to take my profit.

I daresay I should take "Good Advice". Thing is I always think to myself, if
your advice is so good why haven't you already retired on a sandy shore
already. Can anyone answer that conundrum for me?

A very good point. I was persuaded to have an in depth planning session
with my local HSBC bloke last year (I'd only gone in to order a new
cheque book quickly and stop the rest as I *thought* I'd lost it). A
very exhaustive interview about assets and attitude to risk. Only
flogging their wares naturally, but the mix and match 'World Selection
Fund' portfolio he suggested for my 2010/2011 ISA allowance has done
well *so far* (but then at the time I bought in 'the only way was up').

Sounds like a very bad idea to me.
Gold rises when stock markets fall and vice versa. Stock markets are
recovering at the moment so gold will soon start to fall as the more
conservative investors move back into shares.
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

FWIW, R-R looks like a good buy at the moment, they took a beating after
the Qantas incident and the shares look very undervalued if you trust
them to solve a simple oil sealing problem.

CAVEAT :- This advice is worth what you paid for it.

Erm yes that's a particular type of investing. Basic "market" stuff, where
the agents cream as much as the investor (or more). Sort of slightly better
than a good saving account. I've never even considered it. I'm sure that's
"just me" but I'm not having it.

I was rather more talking about XX% net plus p/a and VC opportunities.
Places the real *private* money goes. To date I don't think I've gone with
    anything I didn't find myself.

I know one or two people who are in "invite only" private investment groups,
which usually base offshore. I guess that's where the real action is but I'm
just slightly too risk averse/lack knowledge/big jessie.

A bit better than that if you choose the right mix of funds IME.

    Annualised Return since inception: 24/01/05 - 23/11/10 11.35%
Which included a fairly significant downwards blip to say the least.

I gave up investing directly in the stock market years ago.

Nationwide will give free investment advice to investors. Again they
only talk about their options but they do have a lot of diferent

Theyve helped me over the years...

Hmm thanks, I should really be less averse to talking to advisers
I guess there are those kinds of funds too but the sort of stuff I've spoken
about was quarter to half a mil per investment.
Quite honestly if I'd managed to accumulate 8 figures I'd just be consuming
it, not placing it at any risk whatsoever. FFS it would last several years.
    Maybe.

Come to think about it wasn't a Tory minister criticised for being a member
of such a BVI based fund last month. Not that I could understand why he was
    criticised mind.

If you had done that you would be up 4.75% and still rising already.

Well yes, but as average life expectancy has risen over the last few
decades by a few years, that's quite a considerable percentage
increase of our pensionable age, so we'd have to work longer or pay
more into pension plans to support that extended life of leisure,
    anyway.

    Personally I retired at age 54, I'm 60 now.

    Sold my beer can stock.
People drink in good times and bad.

Can afford anything I want (exceptin Alice) Problem is at 60 not much I
want except a good night sleep

    Sandy shores are over rated......

Just reverse the numbers, for every 18 hours that go by, you're 24
hours closer to death... assuming you can rememeber any of them

I haven't been trying hard enough lately. Liver function test has improved
drastically and I'm no longer at risk of type 2 sugar mongitude.

Although I did try very hard to be run over by a 3 series today, when
crossing North Rd in Cardiff. It seems the hood on my jacket is a little
    opaque.
