....so far. I see Adams is heading south of the border to continue his
    political career.

Ever. SF will not get into government in Ireland.
So? The only way into government for him would be in coalition with
Fianna Fa'il (nobody else will touch SF) and even if FF get within a
sniff of government (very unlikely, since they are being wiped out
electorally at the minute), it is improbable that they would want to
    let the Shinners in.

I've just been discussing this with an Irish cow-orker, and we've
decided that the Irish government didn't realise how big the national
debt was because it was very far away...

Shouldn't they be targetting Oirish Bankers? I'm confused.
TBF when they blew up the speed camera on Antrim Road and chased the Parking
Wardens out of the Falls I nearly donned a Celtic jersey.

Satire is always better when things are going tits-up. We had a golden era
in the 60s when Wilson devalued the £. There was another in the Thatcher
era and it looks like the current mob are intent on providing the material
for another. Lord Young is bound to feature on next week's show.

    OK, I'll bite.
You clearly have a different definition of 'a few' to most people.

A lot of pregnant women return to their jobs in local government which
are held for them and covered temporarily (how shocking that a mother
should *work*). Most 'new' jobs would be with another LA, who is
unlikely to be on a recruitment drive in the current climate.
And yet, I know that where I used to work 3 out 8 Environmental Health
Officers working on Environmental Protection are facing redundancy by
Xmas. Now you may consider being an EHO a 'non-job', SirPip and I would
beg to differ. Yes, simplistic policies in the authority concerned, but
    I suspect not unique.

I reckon 'the majority' will always do 'OK'. Unless we become like 30's
    Germany.
Not so trifling to those personally affected. A mate of mine was made
redundant in July (along with everyone else on his site). He is a shit
hot telecommunications protocol systems tester. Still not found a new
    placement.

"I'm all right Jack". "An acceptable price to pay."

But, "We ain't seen nothing yet."

I seem to recall we disagreed on here about banker's bonuses and
cleaners wages on here before the 'bust'. No point going over old ground
really, either we have empathy for those less fortunate for ourselves or
    we vote Tory.

I had a meeting this afternoon with someone who includes play co-
ordinator in her many roles. We were discussing the consequences if the
Condems get their way and more parents are forced into work. Due to a
recent rise in the birth rate the current child care facilities are
fully subscribed unless you have the cash to pay private rates.

If the Condems want more parents to go to work then they will need many
more play co-ordinators to set up community childcare facilities. They
will also need to spend a load of dosh on capital investment for the
facilities. Of course, their answer will be to let the market suppply
the demand: well it won't because the sector is so highly regulated that
nobody will enter the market on a commercial basis except at the high
end. I'm sure IDS is aware of this but he won't get luscious George to
    stump up the cash.

  19. Oh dear the fallacious "non job" argument so beloved of the right wing
lunatic press and slobbered all over by the loons inside government and
their advisers / pr people / personal photographers. Remind me are
*they* on the civil service or conservative party payroll this week?

Still dear old dunder head Lord Young has not lasted the day. I must
remember that I (and millions of others) never had it so good. Ignorant
    old twat.
Are you sure IDS is aware of it? He shows little awareness of the
consequences of what his policies will mean in the short term.

It is exactly the conundrum you highlight above that just shows this
government as incompetent and uncaring. Still it won't be that long
before the consequences of their policies start landing in the laps of
people who suddenly realise that those public services aren't such a bad
thing after all and why do they have to be scrapped if I'm going to
suffer on a personal basis (or my family will suffer)?

It's a fact of life that people get paid what the market will support
and I don't see any reason to change that. If the fans are happy to
pay a shed load of money to watch football then the players should get
a large chunk of the money and if the general public want to keep
their lights on after dark then they need to understand that I want
more money every year to make that possible.

That doesn't make me a fervent capitalist.
