Amazing mileage last week!

Last weekend, I rode up to Los Angeles to persecute Doc Wong's church
with a bunch of friends. The past two trips north, there was a great
deal of stop and go traffic, and I had to refuel just north of
Disneyland. This time, I left a bit earlier, and it was smooth riding
all the way through the city to Burbank, where I filled up. Coming home
the next day, I made it all the way to my house and then some. I've been
running errands all week, and finally went on reserve yesterday! (Friday)

Now, THAT'S good mileage, especially from an older model (1979, it's
"vintage!") Beemer. Even I was surprised.

As a direct result of my activities last weekend, somebody has been
slinking around my parents' neighborhood, telling people I am a
terrorist and drug dealer. Some "church!" They can't find anything bad
about me, so they have to make stuff up. Pathetic.

I was followed south on Sunday by an SUV, driven by a PI I've seen
before. I lost him by splitting through clusters of traffic, and cut
over to I-15 via Ortega Highway, which winds thru the Ortega mountains.
Two lane twisty. I had hoped to still have the PI along, but alas, I
lost him too early for a little fast foolishness. Oh well...next time,
    maybe.

You appear to be obsessed, but having fun at least.

Last weekend we went to the Mountain View art & beer thingy. Xenu's
folks were there doing whatever it is they do. They had a machine with
all kinds of knobs and dials attached to a probe (money detector?) about
the size of a beer can. SWMBO said I was too drunk to play with them so
    we bought lots of 'art'.

Maybe they slipped up and blended a higher-yielding petrol formula. I
ran up to the Wild Animal Park yesterday and averaged just under 50 mpg
    on a 1982 Virago.

Other things being equal, do newer bikes get better mileage?

Apparently not. No matter how I ride, I get 150 miles to reserve.

    my current herd

    1988 Honda NX250 = 70 mpg , 26 HP
    2003 Yamaha YZF R1= 48 mpg, 138 HP
    1994 BMW R1100RS = 42 mpg (consistently)80 HP
    1998 Honda VTR1000 =37 mpg 97 HP

and actually I have gotten over 50 on the R1 while trying to stretch a
tank of gas between stops. So there is such a wide range of economy this
little sampling of bikes and as far as I can tell after owning quite a
few others that economy just is not a consideration with most
manufacturers. They build them for marketing, for curb appeal and to get
people to notice them for many other reasons than sensiblility.

If you think about it, they all get crap mileage, even the little 250 cc
buggers are not all that efficient. Bah humbug.

No such animal. It's all H and C atoms recombining with O.

Yes. It turns out that good ways of making an IC engine burn more
cleanly also make it more efficient ... and vice versa.
