    OIC.

I'd have no intention of doing it myself.

Indeed. Moving from a flat with a communal carpark to a house with a
built-in garage, my premium went up by >10%.

Because you aren't allowed to do it yourself.

If you don't have the skills, then I guess it makes no difference, as you'd
have to get a man in anyway.

If you are able to do it yourself, it equates to an additional, unnecessary
    cost.

Actually, I sort of realised that after I posted it, but didn't want to
appear to be casting aspersions as to your DIY skills.

it's more a case of builders charge less of an hourly rate than my
free time is worth to me.

While on that subject (DRZs), I've found a slightly more local place
doing them for £4199, and cba with two round-trips to bromley if I can
help it. Time to start haggling.

Found anywhere with a demo bike yet?

And in such a lovely area. Doesn't seem to have any BNP councillors
    these days, mind.

  10. You could do one of the self assessment applications (tell lies if
necessary). Pay the fee and be certificated yourself.

If I wanted to do this, where would be a good place to start?

If you do any work on your house which does not meet building regs, you
can, in extremis, be made to rectify. This will probably only become a
problem if you try to sell. In the case of uncertified wiring you'd have
to get a certificate issued by a certified person.

If you wanted to hide the fact that you'd some wiring yourself, I'm sure
that would be possible but see below:-
They changed the colours of the cable

I was thinking much the same.
haven't been looking. Gotta choose a new house first.

No. You asked how it would be possible to check. Consider yourself informed.

Shouldn't be impossible to knock them down 200 sovs.

Ah. My impulse buy glands are throbbing. I give it a week, maybe two.

Exactly. I don't like to spend my free time on anything I don't
enjoy[1], and I really don't enjoy almost everything associated with
    DIY.

[1] for example, I haven't washed the car since 2004.

how would they know whether or not the wiring was done before or after
the date change, if you had a bunch of old wire kicking around?

You wouldn't. Want to buy a reel of 2.5mm in the old colours?

My experience isn't wide enough to say "never" but the only time I've
had anything in a house checked to see if it meets building regs was
when I was doing a loft conversion which automatically attracts the
attention of the building control officer.
