Depends - does she owe you money? If not, it's time to crack open a
bottle & stick on a party hat.

Why? All it means is they got away without paying for stuff they've had,
whereas you've paid, or are still paying, for whatever you've bought. In
the UK personal bankruptcy means you're out of the credit loop for a
only year now. When I went through it I had 3 years of it. Getting
credit cards and bank accounts now is the same as it was before
    bankruptcy.

Don't they have to come round and seize any assets that might be worth
selling at auction to recoup some of the money?

That's a joke. As long as your assets are disposed of (to a close friend
or relative for pennies) over 6 months beforehand, there's nothing they
can do. The insolvency people weren't interested in any of the stuff
they found at my place, but I did mistakenly forget to tell them I had a
garage in the block just up the road. They did let me keep the VW
Scirocco I owned at the time and my then crap TV etc. They left empty
    handed.

Not a bad wheeze then, so long as the GF/BBF knew six months in advance.

I must admit I'd feel a little smug if I'd had an acrimonious break-up
and the same thing happened and they did lose everything.

Does that make me a bad person[1]

    [1] Hmm, I see Spete's dilemma.

  10. Knowing the cloggies, Bankruptcy over here is probably a very bad thing.
They're paranoid about debt and really quite fussy [1] who and how they
    do their lending.

[1] at least, on the face of it.

Well I don't know Spete's ex, but I do know him and I would like to think
that just going through the process has made her, at the very least, cringe
and, hopefully, feel very very shit about it all. Which makes me a bad
person, probably, for thinking that Pieter should laugh all the way to the
new year... Loudly. So she can hear it.

I didn't feel sorry for the Halifax because they made me pay insurance
to cover the mortgage in the event of a default situation. They
collected on the insurance, and still persued me for the full amount as
well. At the same time the insurance company persued me for the amount
they'd forked out to the Halifax. I thought they were joking when a
bloke arrived at my door with a demand letter. I explained that
insurance companies take premiums and put themselves at risk of losing
out, then I told him to get fucked in those exact words, and closed the
door when he tried to push his way in.

Halifax sold my house for £15,000 less than its actual value to a
housing association, so they could get fucked for two counts of
    attempting to stitch me up.

As for the tax man, I could easily have paid what I owed with what I had
in my wallet at the time, but their ideas of what I owed and my
accountants ideas differed somewhat, so I took the bankruptcy instead so
they couldn't have anything. That settled it once and for all.

I didn't owe any individuals or small companies a penny. Just Halifax BS
    and the tax man.
