For all you know he may have been doing his job with some drunken
arsehole trying it on because he was ejected from the establishment?
He's as good (or bad) as anyone IMHO.

As others have suggested, take some muscle with you and get him to view
the bike away from your premises so that he can't come back later and
    nick it.

I would be amazed if that were true. I thought the whole point of a
banker's draft was that it was written by the bank themselves. Thy'd
loose a lot of credability if their own cheques bounced, surely?

    They might be forged, though.

A friend of mine who sold a bike cash this way insisted the deal be done
during the day so both buyer and vendor could go to a bank to do the deal.

  4. I'm actually a bit concerned about you going on a spying mission just
because a potential purchaser is from Liverpool. Are you really that
scared of people from the North?
    [snip]

all based on whether he was actually telling you the truth. You weren't
telling the truth to him in the chatroom so why do you assume he did?
Isn't this a simple business transaction? If the guy turns up with
genuine readies and you want to sell then wtf is the problem?

I can understand a concern about being done over but are you really this
untrusting in all of your day to day transactions?

Offer to get lots of freebies for JP and get him to come and stand in
the background dressed in his green leathers. That should prove suitably
"threatening" for your pal from the 'Pool.
    [big snip]

well that's just convinced me that I will never bother with chatrooms.
Oh and I think you need to perk up your conversational "style" ;-)

  5. I've met you on a few occasions to do with UKRM and had no idea that
because I come from Liverpool I probably induced some hidden fear in
you that I might mug you or rob your bike, I do apologise. ;o)
If he turns up wearing just a Lacoste tracksuit, trainers and
unfastened FM helmet don't answer the door. [1]

[1] Yes I know it's stereotypical but I'm allowed to say it. :eek:P

It was ok, I made sure I hacked your PC in advance to ensure you were
ok. I've invited criticism by admitting that I might be be prejudiced
but at least I'm unhappy about it and admit it.

Look, thing is I'm not sure what it was that made me feel uneasy when
he phoned. I'm putting it down to his accent but the fact he wants to
travel such a long way rings alarm bells and he also didn't pause for
breath or express any surprise when I said I was showing the bike at an
    address away from my home.
I'm expecting the guy from the AA insurance advert.

Very poor forgerys, as the look, feel, and sound different to the

I've had a buyer go to the bank with me and sort it out like that so she
didn't have to travel on public transport carrying a large sum of money.

Why bother? Ask them, by all means, and if they reply in the
affirmative there's no reason not to let them try the bike - you're
holding the cash price anyway - if they stack it, keep the money.

Pip was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
It's not about the money - letting someone ride your bike when they're
not insured to do so carries a rather *ouch* number of points.

  15. I've done that. Don't like toting the cash, so went with the bloke I
bought the bike from to the bank, who made out a cashier's check for him
    there and then.

Ask them, by all means, and if they reply in the affirmative ...

Doesn't that cover you, then? What is the specific offence committed:
aiding and abetting use of a motor vehicle without insurance, or
    similar?

Of course, if one has already done the supersleuth bit and he _is_
"riding on falsified insurance" then one should be considering one's
position, having foreknowledge, as it were.

Just what good matey is doing himself carrying fake insurance is
questionable, however. If he is doing that so he can flash the
certificate to Abso before he takes it on the test ride would cover
Abso against a nicking for it, I guess - but the bike he is riding
will, if checked, come up as uninsured to Plod, and it is obviously
useless in case of an incident.

I'd be heading for the hills, myself. Especially if I was as worried
about the whole thing as Abso seems to be.
