First born lives in Leicester with her man. They have an AR (don't know
what model yet). They need some help with it. Is there anyone here who
can help point them in the right direction (and within easy reach of LE3)?

First off, it is a Alfa, not Alpha. The model designation is pretty
viatl, as there is a wide span of types.
This is not surprising, it is Italian after all.
Andy Hewitt's yer man, but he's a pseudo-Norvern Maahnkey these days.

Best find out exactly what it is and what the symptoms are and see if
it can be diagnosed through the miracle of usenet, mate.

    Don't do that.... point them at alt.autos.alfa-romeo - you'll get a
    better response there.

Although the faults are pretty universal!
I'd recommend Yellow Pages start looking under 'Psych...'
Wayay mon. Although I got my dream and work with Hondas again :)))

I can't guarantee that I'd be able to fix a lot of the stuff that goes
wrong with my cars / bikes, but I'm usually able to diagnose what's up
and know what should be done to fix it, even if I'm not skilled enough
    to do it myself, IYSWIM.

I do indeed SWYM. Ever thought of being a teacher?

as for Alfa 146's....is an N reg a Boxer or the Fiat lump? I know they
changed in 95 but can't remember when.

the I-4 Fiat lumps were forever going wrong when we had them on fleet in
Avis for the first year or so, normally oil pressure maladies, ECUs,
clutches and the dreaded red key problems.

I know bugger all about the boxer engined ones because they had stopped
making them when we got 146s. Must be sluggish though. 1300 kg with an Alfa
    33 motor? No thanks...

Lol! Don't have anywhere near the patience to do that.
    Pretty sure it'll be a Boxer, unless it's a very late N-plate.

In which case it may well have just 'expired' - somehow Alfa made a very
reliable engine into a heap of useless junk when it was stuck in the
    145/146 range.
This is exactly the reason why I'd avoid a 155 with the 16v lump, and
    look for an 8v version.
The 146Ti, 145 Cloverleaf was pretty good. However, like you say, the
145/146 shell was significantly heavier than the 33 it replaced, so they
never had the sparkle of the 33 16v.

Ah, I know it was around 95, cos that was when we first got 146s. Probably
got them early though because the big fleets like Avis have a habit of
    getting new models very early.

I discovered this to my cost a few years ago [1] when I stuffed a Fiesta
Zetec S into a parked 7.5 ton truck [2]. Rang the local Ford dealer trying
to get bits for it and was startled to hear the parts bloke say "Zetec S?
Can't be, they're not making them yet".. Took four months to get a new wheel
    for the fucking thing.

    [1] around Xmas 98.
[2] on a straight road. Yet more proof I shouldn't be on 2 wheels.

    I would say so too.
Although the TS 16v lump was most reliable in the 145/6.
Yes, the same goes for the V6 as well, get a 12v lump and it'll go
forever, the 24v ones are total crap.
The 2.0 litre versions weren't bad.

  20. In Andy Hewitt triped:
My old 146 used to suffer from frozen handbrake cable on a regular basis in
winter, however the temperature in NW Leicestershire is above freezing so I
guess its not that on this one.
